I have a young 4yo mare who has just been away for 3 weeks schooling. She’s come home and looks well, but is very sensitive with her flanks being touched and fidgety when tacking up. She’s always been a bit fidgety but now even more so. There’s be a couple of times she’s been reluctant to go on the correct canter lead, and although she’s been away for fitness she seems to tire really easily when she’s being ridden. I’ve called the vet and they are coming next week. I’ve never experienced ulcers or anything like it before. I’ve put her out to grass with a bale of hay and just let her be a horse for a bit again and have a bit of break from work. Is that the right thing to do? Anyone had any experience with this? Thanks ?

I don’t know much about it but has EPSM been considered? Could be anything really, but I agree that continuing to work her might cause more problems than it solves and best wait for the vet. However if it’s something like Sacroiliac strain then being out of work would often make a horse look fine until the second ride after a break.
