Ok so when my newly broken mare is following a horse or person she is fab.....on her own, she doesnt seem to get it! im paranoid if i keep doing things with other horses she will come to rely on them??

I think that some just take longer to build their confidence and 'get it'.

I always start out riding behind another horse, then work beside it and then ask the baby to go in front at times. That way there is a back up if the horse has a confidence crisis. Then when you start doing things on your own just do a tiny amount and build up slowly. I'm sure that you'll get there eventually!

Persevere.

It will just click into place one day. My pony didn't seem to have an obvious lack of confidence after he was backed, he was just very slow and unresponsive and came across as being lazy, but during the last couple of months (he has only been ridden once or twice a week over winter) he has really come on and is now just nicely forward going in walk and trot. He can resort to being similar when something new is asked of him, eg: canter, he went lazy and slow again almost as if he couldn't get his head around the fact that he was being allowed to change to a faster pace, but after a few weeks he's getting the hang of that now too. I just think its his way of learning. I was worried about being too hands-on from the ground whilst he was being ridden, but have just gently backed off over time and he only relies on me again when learning something new, so I'm quite redundant in-between times.

Just persevere and don't be afraid to let things happen at his pace.

As above really - Stick with it, and make baby go in front on the 'easy or quiet' sections to build confidence!

My broodmare did nothing but in-hand for 8yrs, when I sat on top and asked to walk on, sometimes she would just turn around and look at me!!! :D
