Hi everyone, new to the forum.

I'm having a hip arthroscopy (due to a fall) soon. The surgeon has given me a ball park figure of 3-4 months before I'm riding again.

Has anyone had one before and can give me a bit of detail about their recovery and how it went? How long did it take for you? What was it like getting back in the saddle for the first time again?

Thanks in advance!

i had birmingham hip resurfacing done on both hips, one year apart and i rode after 3 months with each one. i then had a total hip replacement on one of them as i had problems and once again rode after 3 months. its a different surgery to yours but in the same place ...i think i could have ridden earlier but my mare was very lively and i didnt want to ride if i wasnt fully fit...if she had been a plod i would have ridden after 6 to 8 weeks...hope that helps..

That's great, thanks for your reply. I want to do all the physio I can to speed up the recovery process so with your comments in mind I could maybe aim for a bit sooner than 3 months. But I guess it's best not to rush!

it very much depends on how you feel, you need to listen to your body and dont rush into anything you dont feel fully ready for. 3 months isnt that long .the worst bit for me was the first 6 weeks when i couldnt drive. good luck

there is a fb group riding after replacement and other injuries - seems very friendly and good advice / experience sharing. i am not a hip person but waiting for total left knee replacement!
good luck with your surgery and recovery

My experience of surgeons, and no disrespect intended, is that they don't understand what is involved in horse riding so it is hard for them to give good advice. I think you will need to take it day be day and see.

agree, some consultants tell people who have had hip replacements that they cant ride again, and others think it is like sitting in a chair, both totally wrong, i ride better now than before the hip ops..each persons recovery is different and as long as you listen to your body and dont rush into riding too soon you should be fine....
