Hip displacial?

Does anybody know anything about it?

My dog (approx 3/4 years) has just been diagnosed with it. We have put him on cortaflex as it is a joint problem. Was just wondering if any one had a dog with it? and how it affected them as they got older and so on.

oh well... not too bothered about all the details. Just wanted to know if any one had any first hand experience of it thats all.
 
Sore point this--In the sixties I had an Aussie Terrier.It was just when they were starting to x-ray dogs and give hip scores.
Little dogs especially terriers were'nt supposed to have any problems.
After two litters one of the pups I sold (at 6mnths) was supposed to have it (At least that's what the vet told the owners.)I was mortified and let them have a grand daughter as a companion.This pup was 9mnths old when they had it with no sign of problems yet I heard through the grape vine she had also developed hip problems.
I immediately took my bitch Alice to be x-rayed thinking there must be some mistake only for the vet to say she also had H.D.and when the X-ray was sent away to the kennel Club she did not even get a Breeders letter (They didn't hip score in those days-no breeders letter meant her hips were crap)
I immediately stopped breeding from her and she eventually died at 13yrs still able to jump gates as if they weren't there and out run my other dogs!
I was since told that it could depend on the way the dog was laid on the table for x-ray as to the score! I also knew dogs that had failed yet passed on a second x-ray.I think my Aussie was the only one in the breed to have it!!!
It is a crippling desease and breeders are doing their best to eradicat it by X-raying their dogs before breeding.When I bought my present pup I had to sign a form to say I would not breed off her.It would be revoked if I had her x-rayed and she had a good score.My bitches parent's score when added together don't make double figures which is very good.
The other piece of information I picked up from my other breed was feeding Vit C helps along with the BARF diet.

My Aussie bitch suckling a "kitten" (Obviously she missed not having pups as everytime my cat had a litter she produced milk and shared duties with the cat--until the kitten reach four months then all hell broke loose!

My dog sometimes goes 'lame' from it on and of, but started to get worse recently so took him to the vet. Hoping that the cortaflex should help him. He had a limp when we first got him (rescue dog, def. has terrier and lab in him) but he was just so sweet we couldn't leave him there! lol
 
IT is a common problem in German shepherds...It is detremental for a dog with this condition to keep them at a healthy weight to take the strain of the area....my mams Shepherd had hip displasia and problems with her spine...she has been on meds since she was about 2 years old Metacam and synaquin...they an oral suspension pain relief and joint supplement.

Depending on how bad the problem is...exersise should be monitered and not over exerted.
If the condition is managed...and weight and exercise maintained...then they can still live to a good old age...although it is normally their legs/hips that fail them in the end...my mams last shepherd lived till she was 13 and she had really bad hip displasia.

I echo what Cala says, hd is not a death sentence, keep your dog slim and regularly exercised and his quality of life should be good. Many years ago I had a GSD who was x rayed at 12 months and was told by BVA she would be off her legs by the time she was 2. This was before hip scoring. When she was about 3 the hip scoring scheme started and I had her scored. She came back with a score of 98! She lived until she was 13 and at the age of 9 won several veteran classes. I am not casting doubt on your vet but I really would advise you ask him to submit the x rays for scoring. I have heard many cases where a vet has said a dog has bad hips and in reality they have been fine. In one bitch I sold the owners phoned me whilst the bitch was under anaesthetic from x ray and said vet said her hips were so bad be might as well spay her there and then (this bitch was on breeding terms!) I said no until we had a score back, she came back with a total of 8, which is very low. To go back to the exercise, swimming is great for dogs with bad hips, as long as you dry them well afterwards.

He is a heinz 57, but by the way he acts and looks def. has terrier in him also lab. He was a rescue dog.
