My life has been a complete drama full of sadness in the last 5 months, due to my dressage horse being lame. His croup muscle was in spasm, area was painful and he had back pain. First we thought he was compensating it for the hock pain, and he was out for 2 months, only small turn out and box rest. Now, 2 months after, he is back to work, but no improvement. He is not lame in any gait, but we started to think of a hip injury as hock treatment changed nothing. He is 8 year old OTTB, and he used to bolt out of his box when leaving, previous owners said it was due to hip injury, but he was stabled for 6 months, so they thought it healed. Now it came back to us, plus the spasm in his muscles in that area. And when he was trotting slowly, his leg was moving weirdly, in the hip area, that also made us think. That weird movement would go away once he starts trotting faster. He had the following symptoms, lack of impulsion, not going forward, bucking when switching to canter, avoiding collection, not wanting to extend the trot. Now my life has crashed, literally. As I think of this, I've been crying whole day. As it is an old injury, what can be done? I don't think rest will work, cause it has been two years. He would only compete up to medium dressage level, and no jumping, except a cross rail or two occasionally. Please tell me what to do, or what could it be? Vet will be out as soon as possible. Please help me out, I'm so sad now. :(

Hi
Have you thought about sacroiliac problems, if he is sore in this area it could be an old or new ish injury.
Also have a look at him from behind and see how symmetrical he is this might tell you if he has a pelvic problem.
I would arrange to have the vet out for an investigation.
Also maybe try an ACPAT physio for further consultation.
good luck a problem horse is no fun but keep your chin up.
Cheers

something else, have you felt along his spine? is he particularly sore in any area as kissing spines can be similar to these symptoms.
hopefully this is not the case.
