Hi has anyone had hip replacement surgery ..if so what protection do you wear whilst riding. I have an air jacket but just want additional protection for my hips and so far can find no one who provides anything for horse riders I have seen shorts for cyclists and snow boarders however reviews do not mention suitability for horse riders…any suggestions.

Some riders wear padded cycling shorts to protect their delicate areas so some will be suitable, you may have to order some to try them and see how prominent any seams are, they will be the problem. It would be entirely possible to have a seamstress make you up some shorts from a leggings pattern (Greenstyle have some that are suitable as riding tights) and have pockets over the outside, then you just need some d3o sheets (the best impact protection around, mm for mm, I'd avoid thicker and softer versions) to insert in the pockets.

I am interested in thoughts on this, I have just had a hip replacement and though not riding yet am wondering about extra protection I guess the best protection would be not to fall off, but who can guarantee that!

Hi yes exactly , it’s not that I am not confident I am just aware sometimes you cannot control an event and just want to be best Prepared as I can be so any protection is better than none hence why I wear an air jacket 👍

I've had both hips replaced and wear a body protector, have Acavallo quick release stirrup irons and an RS-tor on my saddle which is supposed to help break a fall
Not sure the padded shorts would be comfortable to ride in ?
I'm just a bit more cautious these days, I don't take any unneccessary risks and have no qualms about jumping off or turning back home if its a spooky horse day. I've fallen off a few
times from my 17hh horses during the 13 years I've had my replacements and they first thing I think about is my hips ! But fortunately all has been OK

I’ve had 3 hip replacements as one of them went wrong, never thought about any sort of protection just rode as usual, only fell off once which was January 2022 on the road and while I was laying on the floor was worried about my hips, they were no problem it was my head that was🙂🙁and that was very serious
How long did you wait after surgery before you rode? I’m 4 weeks in still on crutches so a while yet but it would be good to have a time in mind😊

I was 12 weeks and I went for a lesson on a mechanical horse first so I could get a feel before getting on a real horse. I then went to a riding school and rode a couple of times before I rode my own and she was very sharp and I needed to have good balance , once I was on her it was fine
