Have just picked my 2yr old cocker spaniel up from having a hip replaced.. it seems her pelvis was not normal so they have had to cut extra bone away to fit the new cup.

While doing this the nerve has been damaged and she is dragging her leg even when being supported. They think she has some feeling there but have no idea if she'll get full use...

Poor girl is very sad and sore, does anyone have any experience or advice to help me with her???

Thanks

I'm very sorry that your little dogs operation has not gone as well as expected, hip replacements are complex operations and sometimes things can happen, not that it makes it any better for you though. First of all what have the vets advised you do with her? Have they given you any physiotherapy exercises to help the nerve function? Is she on pain medication? When do you see the vet again?

You really need to get her started with physiotherapy and hydrotherapy, you won't be able to start hydro until her wound has healed and the other complicating factor is the actual surgery as you need to be very very careful initially that her new hip doesn't dislocate. Speak to the vet about this and ask for a reccomendation as you need someone who knows what they're doing.

Hopefully she will get function back but she will need some help along the way, you also need to
protect the foot from damage if she's scuffing it. Please PM me if you need to xx

Thanks, to be honest they weren't overly helpful..... she had to go to a referal centre which is 2 1/2 hrs away from home.

When i rang them yesterday to ask if she was ok they didn't mention this problem at all.

They have given me 2 physio excersises to do with her and then back to my vets in 10 days. They also gave us a sling to lift and support her back end.

She's in her cage snoring as i type
