Have you / do you know of anyone who has had a hip replacement and rides?

I would like to hear from anyone who has had this done and was able to ride again afterwards .. how long before you could ride again / was your riding limited afterwards? etc etc..

Any info gratefully received.

I am unable to ride at the moment as my hips are too bad and it hurts too much. :-( its very difficult when all i want to do is get back in the saddle.

I ride an 15hh Irish draught cross .. so hes quite wide!

Thanks

Someone who has his horse at the same yard as mine has had a hip replacement and still rides. He jumps, canters the lot. His horse isn't a total plod either, safe enough but can be a bit jolly at times. I couldn't tell you how long he was out of the saddle for though as I was away at uni at the time.

As for the width of your horse, that may be a problem. The guys horse is pretty narrow, and I know he's always struggled to ride the wider horses at the riding school, but that was before he had his hip done.

I posted last week asking the same question as my mum is due to have her hip replaced in the next 6 months and her surgeon has not recommended riding afterwards.
I'll find the thread for you, as the responses were very positive.
My RI also teaches a bloke who was back riding 3 months after his replacement.

There is a special type of replacement joint they give for riding. Sorry I cant remember but Im sure you can google it..

Hey Lucy, you poor thing, I'm in a similar position, I was in an RTA in July and have lots of damage to my knees and have had to have a ligament removed from my rt knee. I'm looking to get a brace for my knee and hope to get back on in Jan.

With regards to your hips, I would speak with your consultant re riding after the operation, you would need to wait for some time post op (I'm a nurse) and make sure you do loads of physio and listen to what they tell you as they know best.

I am going to start Pilate's (cant spell) the thing with the ball! That is supposed to be brilliant for getting your strength back and has been advised to me by both my instructor and physio's.

Good luck and hope all goes well

Thanks everyone,

I am actually writing this for my mother (she doesnt do computers!)

Yes she has trouble mounting and dismounting already .. but at the moment its the actual riding she cant do as its far too painful. Thats why she wants to know if there is hope after she has a hip replacement.

Re: side saddle ... she has ALWAYS wanted to do this (just have a go) but i did it at pony club camp one year ... and i really think she will find it too uncomfortable .. and of course there would be the mounting problem again.

HAS ANYONE FOUND SIDE SADDLE BETTER when they have been waiting for a hip replacement or once they have ahd one? any recommmended places to try.. we live in hampshire (south)

Please please keep your comments rolling.

thanks

Try www.ride2theside.co.uk they are friendly and will probably be able to give you a list of instructors for SS in your area. Or google the Side Saddle Association - they must have a website, I presume (doesn't everyone, these days!)
