Hippos & Horses, how closely related?!

I think my horse is not far off from running away a joining a hippo family :eek:

After taking him for a hack the other day, I let him graze around the stables whilst I put them down as he is in a restricted paddock all day, he thought this was an excellent opportunity for a roll.....

I agree they must be closely related :D i have a cob cross hippo ...

She has made a wallowing pit at the front of her, field which she visits at least twice a day.
She used to be skewbald but this winter she has turned an attractive soil brown bay :)

At least your has kept his face clean :)
 
*shudders* Mine normally has a rug on, but I was being nice letting him have a bit of fresh air to cool down for a few mins, and that's how he repays me!
 
A friend's pony was a nightmare for rolling!

No pictures sadly, but one day it took four of us well over half an hour to get him reasonable enough to go in his stable for the night! Great chunks of mud all over him, and he'd obviously rolled ealier in the day, then again and again, as there was baked on mud under fresher mud :eek:. He was literally covered from ear to tail to tips of hooves, including under a pretty well fitting turnout rug.
 
To be honest with you OP, it really depends on the bloodlines... that said there can of course be the odd throwback to a distant hippo relation which comes out in the present generations ;p it would seem you have one of these! :)
 
My pony is definately part Hippo - have decided to leave his rug off as he hates them (he is so woolly and only ridden 1/2 a week). Given up trying to make him presentable, just saddle area and head now! Roll on spring....
 
I have a first cross, TB x Hippo. He very closely resembles the wb x in Nics" photo but is def a TB. I hoped, given his posh bloodlines he might be a bit above common habits like rolling in mud but he has dug himself a selection of mud pits just inside his field and takes great delight in selecting one for his morning roll. Given that most of him is covered by a rug he still manages to cover his backside and his neck in clay, disgusting!!
 
OMG i will never again complain about my grey, she is spit spot (to quote Mary Poppins) compared to these photos which are all lovely!!
