We have a new girl on our yard who used to work at a racing yard and is keen to hire out the local gallops to take her pony for a stretch.

My first reaction was that it would be fun to take Daisy as well but then I wasn't sure if it was right for her. She's a speedy little thing when she's in company but not exactly built for it.

Would she "know" to gallop instinctively if she followed my friends pony or would she just canter like she does on a normal hack?

How fit would she need to be? I would say that she's hacking fit. We hack 4+ times a week usually up to an hour with lots of trot and canter and at least one hack of 2 1/2 hours. She is a little overweight and I'm trying to work on this but she is always going to be built for comfort and not speed

im sure she would know to gallop-it is only natural. Surely it would not hurt to take her for a gallop, you dont have to go for long if she gets tired and can always pull up. We went hunting the other day and my friends horse isnt that fit and not built for speed, but she was fine on a couple of gallops we went on. She sounds way fitter than my tb, as he only gets ridden 3 times a week, and he gallops his heart out(would carry on forever if i didnt stop him!)so if you know when to stop, im sure it will be fine-have fun and dont worry!!

don't jump off and go hammer and tongs

start off at a good working canter and gradually get your bum out of the saddle and think of lengthening the stride out rather than speeding up the tempo.

when a horse gallops truely it's belly get's closer to the ground and it's outline lengthens

when she feels like pulling up let her the first few times and after the 'gallop' walk her off for at least 15 mins to allow the breathing and the tendons, etc to get back to normal, don't just stop and get off

if the gallop is uphill then let the hill momentum pull her up when she is ready - don't push her out the first few times.

Also make sure that your flu/tet is up to date and 'legal' as many places used by racehorses are fussy about this. Also make sure you take your cert/passport with you on the day incase it is required for inspection before you can use the facilities.

have fun and enjoy it

Sorry to hijack, but does anyone know of gallops you can hire around the Guildford area?

Luke Dace is in Billingshurst, Amanda Perrett and Lawrence Wells in Pulborough, loads in Findon, or maybe Lingfield racecourse?
