I’m interested in purchasing a new ifor williams hb505 or hb511 with a view to hire it out.
Can’t find too much information and legality or insurance costs involved.
Has anyone had any experience starting this up? Or would it most likely be another failed business venture? I know most people barely break even with hiring out 3.5t self drive boxes.

Hb505 is no longer sold, so you're probably thinking of hb506 and they're a bit small for most people. The hb511 is a good solid option but I think there are a lot of regulations now compared to even 5 years ago. I don't know those regulations and have no interest in finding them for you, I know there are less trailer hire operators than there were and that's probably because it's too much paperwork. I usually "borrow" one from a fellow livery and pay them £30 per outing.

If you hire it out to multiple people and theres an accident or incident you can and WILL be held liable in court. A yearly service is not considered sufficient on a trailer used for 'hire and reward' - you technically need the 6 weekly inspections by a 'competent person'. Plus a 'on and off hire' inspection every single time - recorded - in duplicate.

Not quite sure how it works insurance wise but imagine it would be complicated - I run several plant trailers for our own use within my business and trying to keep on the right side of the law if difficult at the best of times!
