i have an IW 510, it's in very good condition (almost new) but it's just sitting around now and i thought about maybe hiring it out to people and it can help me raise some much needed money!

my question is though what would i need to do to start this 'venture'?

i know i'd have to get the appropriate insurance and all the trailer checks done for safety etc but what about a licence or something from defra if i did that?

any help would be appreciated.

thanks in advance!

I wouldn't. Years ago I let my then YO use my trailer in return for not charging me parking fees. His b**ody horses kicked hell out of my new trailer and he would not repair or make good the considerable damage as "that was horses". So i withdrew use of my trailer, locked it to ensure it didn't get borrowed and told him it was far cheaper for me to pay parking.

Also, as these trailers are so popular, if you advertise it for hire - what checks can you make as a private individual to ensure a: it comes back b: you are not annoucing to thieves galore where the trailer is kept?

It will in all likelyhood get damaged sooner or later. I was told by a dealer who used to hire trailers out, that damage caused by people who aren't used to towing happens on a very regular basis. That particular dealer now only hires out horse boxes.

I used to hire out my Rice trailer. I always took a returnable deposit of £150, took copies of their driver licence (to verify ID) and a copy of utility bills to prove their address. I also had a form to get them to check and sign to agree condition of trailer before it was hired. Didn't have insurance. Made sure they had a lock available, spare tyre and anything else i thought they might need.

Trailer to be honest was only worth about £800 and in a standard kind of condition. I hadn't used it for a while so thought it could earn me some money. I didn't advertise only by word of mouth but was selective about who borrowed it. First person to borrow it bent all the lights on one side and was a bit of a pain to have to meet people when they wanted to collect and deliver it.

Made a couple of hundred pounds over the summer but then ended up selling it to a friend anyway. Dont think i would do it again and certainly not with a trailer of any value! :)
