Poor Moo - nice day today - bit muggy and came in tonight with about a million small flys attached to where his umbilical cord would have been and now its all swollen, also loads of blood spots dwn back legs and his sheath also swollen and got about a hundred scabs on from blood thirsty beasties (flys I assume also..................)

poor boy very sorry for himself and very sore - took me ages to get it all washed - and cooled down still very swoolen though.

Last year he got stung up in his sheath and started bucking etc - had to get vet to give anti imflamitorys.

as wehave just started the nice weather - does any one else get this problem and how best to deal with it.

was looking at fly rugs but dont think they will actually cover right up to his bits!!!

My old boy has been the same, cant find anything to help so will be interested in answers. Hes also got sunburn already! *huff*
 
Human midge spray sprayed on to his manly bits morning and night.
My poor boy gets attacked so badly by them as he has pink skin, but this seems to work.
 
Be very careful what you spray on a gelding's/stallion's sheaths or penises (man bits fgs!!!!) - if you are a female owner, ask your OH to test any wonder sprays on HIS penis and ask him to rate the pain level. If he's clinging screaming to the ceiling, this might be a clue. If you are a male owner, try spraying the wonder spray on yourself and try to rate it objectively. Anything that stings is damaging to such sensitive tissue. Boiled, cooled water to sponge away any gunge followed by dollops of something like vaseline, udder cream, Savlon etc etc. If you'd happily slap it on your own genitals, it should be ok on the horse. This is always a good test for ANY new product you want to slap on your horse. Ask yourself if you'd be happy having it slapped on yourself, or your OH, or your child!
 
I mix Sudocrem and Vaseline together and cover all along the belly and sheath area - usually works a treat!!
 
We use the NAF Summer Fly Cream or Sudocrem around the sheath area. All but one of our horses is fine with this, the one who isn't objects very strongly to cold cream on his wotsits. So we are going to test patch him for the Avon Skin So Soft Spray and see if that makes a difference.
 
Becareful with skin so soft on his sheath I tried it on by lad, just a small area and the skin peeled, another fan of sudocrem, if its good enough for a babies bum!
 
All the geldings in our area (central scotland) had sheaths like balloons the other day

Black flies are out in vengence. Thankfully the windy wet weather we've had the last few days have got rid of most of them.

It's partly to do with the actual fly bites, but more due to the constant swishing from the tail, flicking up between their lges and swatting the sheath.

I barrier creamed our lot with Summer Fly Cream (Carr Day and Martain I think), mud fever cream (thick and stays on - udder cream would probably do the trick)) then fly gel over the top. Within two days they were all back to normal.

) but it should just be the hairy skin of the sheath you need to fly cream.
