Just been to the vet for a wee lump on Fodhla's face. Vet said he hopes its just a histiocytoma but said it's presenting a little unusually and may be a mast cell tumour. Because of where it is, just under her eye, he's going to put her under and try to remove the whole thing to histology rather than attempt to get a small Biopsy.

Any one have any experience of either? I'm not catastrophising just yet but I'd like to be prepared for the worst if it comes to that while I have a clear head.

One of our Rottweilers had a mast cell tumour removed from her elbow. Vet said he had taken a decent margin. But about 18 maths later she was pts be cause of a splenetic tumour which had spread to her bowel., *Rotts are very prone to cancer.*
If I were able to have the time again, I would ask for a scan of the spleen when the mast cell results came back. With a different breed, I would want a in- depth discussion with the vet about the possibility of other tumours.

Thanks both for answering! The Internet seems to think histiocytoma is most likely in dogs 3 and under she is just about 3 but we don't know for sure so hopefully it's that.

Pas I will discuss with that with the vet. thank you!

I had a labrador who developed a Mast Cell Tumor on his tail at age 5, his tail was docked, it came back on the stump 7 years later and had spread to his pelvis, he was old and quite deaf by then and we didn't want to put him through surgery so we let him go. It was heartbreaking but hopfeully your dog has the histiocytoma and not the MCT

Hi, I had a similar experience in May with my 8 year old lab dog. A warty lump suddenly appeared on the corner of his eye and over a bank holiday weekend grew to the size or my little finger tip. It was irritating him so popped a cone on and got an appt on the Tues evening.

Like you, vet said histiocytoma or mast cell tumour. Histiocytoma usually in dogs under 2 years (he's 8!) so a worried few days waiting for a surgery slot as impossible to put a needle in it for a sample whilst awake as so close to his eye. As he'd need a GA to get a sample decision was made to remove it.

All good news, a harmless histiocytoma and the vets did a fantastic job with the surgery. After a few months no scar whatsoever.

Most of my flatcoats have had histiocytoma at one point or another. They start of as small pink lumps then often start to look really manky and nasty then suddenly drop off. One of my girls had one at a year old then two more at aged 7 with one on her ear flap. That one suddenly dropped off whilst out on a walk (lump not ear🤣)
Fingers crossed for your dog that this is a histiocytoma

Hopefully Fodla's lump will be benign.

Two of my dogs had mast cell tumours.

2006, JRT, 14 years, diagnosed with intermediate Grade II, increased risk of metastasis. Removed surgically followed by a course of radiotherapy. Remained cancer free and was PTS in 2009 due to unrelated illness..

2013, lurcher, 9 years, diagnosed with mast cell, high grade Patnaik grade III. The nodule was narrowly excised (the vet had not expected it to be a mast cell tumour).

I was told it was a very aggressive, highly malignant tumour. Poor prognosis. The vet did not advise further treatment.

We were lucky, she had a few years without problem but it eventually returned deep in her shoulder muscle, surgery was not an option. Not PTS immediately she was not in pain and still enjoying life. She was PTS in 2017 due to the cancer.

My hound had an egg sized mast cell tumor removed aged about 2. It had grown very quickly and was in a tricky spot. She had the tumour and a good margin removed, 8 weeks strict crate rest (which was tough but do-able) and died of unrelated age related problems aged nearly 15. It was very worrying at the time but thankfully never troubled her again.

I ordered a soft cone but it hasn't arrived and they've sent her home in a satellite dish 🥹 she's so out of sorts but I'm poaching her some fish for dinner as we speak so that should cheer her up.

The nurse said as they were putting the drip in she was pawing her for pets, which sounds like Fodhla.

Thanks again everyone for sharing experiences. Now we have to wait for it to come back from a lab in England, fingers crossed.

It prob would have been helpful if I'd provided a fuller update, for people who may find this thread in the future.

It was an atypical presentation of a papilloma. So she may get more in the future who knows, but hopefully not.
