Historical pictures of breeds

Just when you thought you had finished wasting time on the internet!!! Love this!

Interesting how the breeds of britain seem to me the most changed! The dandie and the bedlington are so different now -- though the curly coat retriever hasn't really changed thru the centuries.

I was just thinking how little some breeds have changed with the biggest changes being the coats.

Look at photos of dogs on pet sites and how they vary from the preferred standard nowadays and then apply the same mixture of desired and pet type to the ones back then.

while I agree that hte coats are much more profuse on most of the breeds of today, I was thinking about the structure of some dogs. Scotties, Dandies - the legs have got much shorter. Bedlington's roach back was not nearly so pronounced, and the head shape is different - more of a defined stop in the olden days. The cockers in the photos are what we now know as field spaniels (but I already knew that from studies) and they were changed after the influence of the American blood being reintroduced to British stock. The pointers and larger gun dogs to my eye don't look that different. Clumber spaniel doesn't seem that different. The Irish terrier looks a little different - but I think that has changed by the fashion of the furnishings - I don't see many of them to be that up on their confo.

Its nice to see alot of breeds havnt markedly changed. Love the pics of the fox terriers, the main ingredient in a parson and look just like todays parsons, look nothing like todays fox terriers!

If you look some of the pics do show a marked resemblance to modern SFT but the wire is what we would call broken coated. One of the 1900 (ish) Scotties had a very modern head. I found the Newf & Ladseer side by side interesting - one would pass muster today but the other was nothing like.

Loving the multitude of Boston terrier pictures :D

I say plenty of the "throwback" variety, around 30 lbs in weight, still to this day. In fact, even the little ones look like the Bostons of today.

Quite a few changes in some of those breeds now then.......

Pomeranian, German Shepherd, Beagle, Borzoi to name a few.

There are still GSDs out there that look like those, not obviously in the showring though :p...as mentioned Canto von der Winerau especially, he is one of the four pillars of the modern breed (and an originator of the very red colouring which is so trendy these days).

One of the good things about the breed being so well documented, you can indulge in a lot of research and geekery :p

I discovered there were two types, the desert type looks more like those in the vid :) only ever used to seeing them really hairy!
