Bit of a rant really but just saw a post on FB that really upset me. Someone had witnessed a car ahead hid a dog seemingly dead and drive on, and poster couldn't stop as they had to get to work. Now I've lost 4 dogs on the roads all in freak accidents, and only one person came to the house to let us know, he was a bus driver with a full bus who had stopped by the road to lift my poor boy and came to the door to personally let us know. I can't even describe how much that had helped the situation, and I will always remember and thank him for what he did.

In the other circumstances, a rescue had passed managed to follow a tractor half a mile before being hit. Other two, builders had left gate open and rubbish lying by the side of the road and the mini dachshund went out and was killed instantly, the second (dads rescue) went out to see what had happened we think, and was hit also. She died in my dads arms on the way to the vet after suffering for an hour laying by the road in the rain.

Not ONE person stopped. It wasn't exactly a busy road but it wasn't empty, it wasn't dark, they were obviously our dogs as we were the only house about and there was plenty of room for them to stop. They were all wearing collars with our details, all it would have taken was 5 minutes to let us know instead of searching and hoping they were okay only to have the worst outcome. If I was ever to come across that situation I know for sure I'd tell the owners, in the past I've spent hours driving up and down roads with dogs that have been out wandering and each time their owners had been worried sick. What would you do?

Don't know why I'm posting this, its long and pointless but I just got SO angry/upset. Thanks for reading.

I couldn't not stop, it wouldn't matter where I was going and whether or not it would make me late. I would stop, get the animal to a vet if alive and report to police. If there was a tag on the collar I would also ring the owner.

How awful - I just don't get it. A few weeks ago I was about to go out in the car and noticed something g on the verge along from my drive. I walked along and saw it was a dead cat. I knocked on both neighbours doors (even though I knew they did not have cats - thought they might know whose it was). Concern from one, and offers to use facebook to track down owner, the other sAid he had seen it in the road and moved the body from the road to the verge as he didn't want it squished. I couldn't believe anyone would leave it at that. We are a small group of houses along a fairly busy road, it took me no more than 10 minutes to track Down someone who knew who the owner was.

Anyway, by the the time the owner was home, and taken along to identify the body, it had gone. Turned out another neighbour had moved the cat t

......to the field next door as his wife didn't want to see it. I could only think how I would feel if my cat went missing - I'd want to know what had happened. (Sorry for the 2 posts, finger trouble).

Some years ago a cat was run over by a car in front of me which did not stop. I pulled over and as I went to get it another car ran over it!!
I picked it up and put in in a horse rug in the back of the car and took it to the vets I use. I thought he would just be PTS but they said they would at least see what was wrong first. He was not chipped and no collar so no way to know where he had come from. The road was a dual carriage way with houses set down side roads off it so could have come from anywhere. I said if the vets saved him and no owner came forward I would have him and pay the bills. What else can you do?! My vets said if that was the case they would keep costs down.

I put flyers through every one of the house doors near where he was run over. It gave my number and the number of the vets where he was being treated. About a week later, he was doing well and the vets had saved his leg, I got a call from them. A couple had turned up and collected him without so much as a thank you to the vets or myself. They refused to pay most of the bill saying they could not afford it and took him to a blue cross hospital (or so they said). We never found out what happened to him. I would do the same again as having had a cat go missing I cannot imagine not knowing what had happened.

I even put a notice in my local shop once when I found a dead cat outside in the road. I buried it and put a description and a "call this number if you have lost a cat like this" on the shop notice. A lovely lady called and was very grateful to know what had happened. She then wanted him exhumed so he could be buried at home!!!!

The poster is just as bad in my opinion.

Its law to stop/report if you hit something or witness an accident, which hitting a dog is considered as according to my local police.
