But I bought him.

So the ILPH and RSPCA decided not to do anything. Nope. Not even a warning.

I couldn't get him out of my head, I weighed up the pros and cons, and decided to spend the last of my birthday and christmas money on a 5-star vetting for him. He passed with flying colours! The vet said he was pretty battered, but he'd be good as new in a month or so with plenty of antiseptic spray, a short course of antibiotics and the right feed. She said he had a kind temperment, and nice conformation, and if we could get him for the right price, to go for it!

So one of my mum's friends, a lady who breaks in competition horses for a living, said she would come with us in the box when we went to get him, just incase she thought we'd be completely out of depth. She said she was really suprised! In a good way, and that so long as everything went right, we'd got ourselves a bargain (we paid £2000 in cash) And guess what? She's offered to bring him on for us!

So meet Oscar. He's such a sweety! He was a little bit manic when he arrived on Saturday, but after three hours in the box you can't blame him (he loaded fine). Besides, he was much better behaved then Solo, and Solo's supposed to be a schoolmaster!

On the first day he jumped at every little noise, but I was bringing him in from the field today (they're out without rugs because it's boiling hot here for some bizarre reason) and the tractor zoomed really fast right up his bum, and he turned to have a look and a sniff at it, but wasn't scared at all!

Another amazing thing is his paces. He has extremely long legs. Literally like a giraffe! You have to jog to keep up with his relaxed walk! Our instructor was pretty impressed, and said that he'd probably make a good dressage horse, and had possibly been driven in the past.

The dealer's told us that they'd had him imported from Denmark, which would explain why they called him a knabstrup. Knabs are used for driving aren't they? Perhaps he's a crossbred? That might explain the floaty stride!

We're going to restart him in two weeks, but in the meantime he has at least seven hours turnout a day and a brisk walk around the farm, just to get him aqquainted with black bags and combine harvestors. He's very chilled out at the moment, and has settled in wonderfully allready, I've never seen a horse so happy! He's made a best friend out of Solo, and it's lovely to see them out together. He's fine to catch, knows his way to his field and his stable, has impeccable manners, and I honestly can't find fault. Let's just hope he doesn't turn out to be a devil under saddle

My mum's friend is very experienced though, so I'm not too worried

Wish me luck! Oh, and please don't bother criticising - What's done is done
wink.gif
Any advice is welcome though!

His passport says 15.1hh, but so does Solo's (the grey).

We're having it updated anyway, and measuring him tomorrow. He needs a show name. I was thinking along the lines of 'Ugly Duckling'...

So fingers crossed for me and spotty-bum Oscar!!!

I don't know the full story about this....but you seem so happy with your new horse. Good luck and well done!!

He looks a lot better than I thought he would. Definalty an Appaloosa - he has no tail! a typical British Bred Spot - I would be very surprised if he had ever been near Denmark.

Good luck and congratualtions

LOL!! You've gotta do what you've gotta do in this life.

I have to say, he is absolutely NOTHING like I was imagining! I was expecting to see some emaciated, skin and bone creature with blood hanging off him all over the place!

He's actually quite nice and apart from the wormy belly looks to be in reasonable condition.

He is raving Appaloosa! Just look at the lack of tail! Maybe the dealer did tell you some truths! If he did come from Denmark then he could be a Knabstrupper X Appy.....although he looks pure Appy to me.

I am so pleased that you are happy with him - I hope he repays you and you both have a great life together. I will look forward to hearing about his progress.

Best of luck and enjoy!

No, I was expecting MUCH MUCH worse based on the previous thread!

Well good luck with him DP, hope your fairytale has a happy ending

Deadpan, you said:

But also absolutely starved. He was supposedly seven years old, but looked eighteen, he was so thin. His spine and ribs stuck out, and even his withers looked bad.

I am not at all suprised the ILPH did nothing about him, he looks in super condition TBH!

Enjoy him!

Good luck you lunatic!!!! Only joking......He does look lovely and nothing some TLC won't cure....

you are so going to have to keep us all posted on your progress with him!

Lovely, pleasant surprise at the pic - thought he would be skin and bones! Good luck, can't wait to hear your progress.

LOL!! No I am totally not surprised the ILPH did nothing either. Crazy.....now take a look around where I live Deadpan and you will see some VERY sorry real rescue cases!!

ditto!

He doesnt look bad at all!

My boy was thinner than that when we got him! Would hate to think we would have been reported! i know a lot of horses who winter worse than that!

I hope you have wormed him and are doing a 5 day course or something before you put him out with other horses, although Im assuming from your post he is already out with your other one?

Hi

Ugly duckling? oh no he looks like a swan to me!! He looks lovely and it is great that you have bought him! He is a very lucky man!

Have fun with him, he looks like he will be great and the fact that he loads when he has had a hard time is good news too!

Sounds like you were spinning a bit of a tale tbh, he looks fine. Good luck with him.

sorry, not even approaching thin!!! He is lovely but just lacking muscle I think!!! What did the vet put all the lameness issues down to.... (sorry if there wernt any, I thought there were problems with his knee or something, cant find the original post) glad he passed the vetting though, proves there cant be that much wrong I suppose.

Good luck with him, I am sure he will be a stunner when worked and muscled up.

LOL!!! There's more yarn here than in a knitting shop
grin.gif
. Aww only messing Deadpan but you have definitely fabricated bits of this story.
wink.gif

I read the whole original thread and with this one it looks like a young girl who wanted to play the part of the heroic rescuer so grossly exaggerated the condition of the animal.

However no harm done, and he does look a nice sort, so best of luck to them.

Just refreshed my memory and yes, I think you might be right Spiral

Whilst I wish Deadpan and her lovely new ponio all the best I must admit to feeling a little miffed at being strung along for an entire HUGE thread in which SO many HHOers took the time to offer advice and sympathy.

Still, alls well that ends well.
smile.gif

Isn't it funny...I just re-read your other post after it was bumped. I hadn't remembered that he was an Appaloosa. Just that he was so poor, rubs and back bone sticking out etc. Was a pleasant surprise to see such a striking, handsome man in the picture.

Doesn't look poor to me though. You can see the withers like that on any horse with it's head down to grass....even my table top backed cob (poor Patches).

He's lovely. I hope you enjoy him. He is cheap too. I'd have easily paid £2k for a horse like him who flew a vetting!

I'm secretly hoping to steal Tia's Spotty horse.....although technically he's no longer Tia's....but that's irrelevant!
