I’m very excited, that our next long awaited (3 years!) puppy is now in existence!

Just a week old at present and 7 weeks seems a long time to wait at the moment ? I’m trying to occupy myself with some shopping…

We already have two dogs, so we have crates, bowls, toys, whistles, leads etc. Obviously we’ll get a few new toys- it’s pretty much the law!

I’d also like to get a fairly tough but not too expensive bed for the crate- am thinking high walled nest type with a cushion that I can place a hot water bottle under to begin with as he/she will be coming to us at the end of jan- if anyone has any suggestions I’d be grateful!

Otherwise, is there anything that you have found to be a godsend with your dogs/puppies that I may not have thought about? Open to any weird/random suggestions ?

Puppy pads! There are at least 2 views about whether to put them in the crate but they are absolutely brilliant for mopping up accidents. We keep them to hand for general household spills, so much quicker than having to fetch a mop.

Thankyou! I’ve never left pads in the crate, or really used them much at all tbh but hadn’t thought about using them for cleaning up messes- we keep them in the garage for when we do oil changes on the cars so have a stock already!

An extra head torch sounds like a plan! I already have one in the car for horses and dog walking but one for the garden is an excellent plan!

We really like the coffeewood chews for the big girls so will grab a puppy sized version and a fluffy throw is a must for the chilly nights too- Thankyou ?

Pads but only for soaking up accidents or putting in bottom of crate to soak stuff up.

dr Beckmann pet accident scrubby brush carpet cleaner. You’ll thank me if you have carpet anywhere

hugrug door mat

microfibre towels

keep old towels, bath mats, dressing gowns etc. they would rather sleep in a nest of that than a fancy bed, it washes and dries quickly

crate - crate from day 1. There might be tears but it is so worth it for them and you.
Ours loves the crate and it’s peace of mind it won’t chew something dangerous or fight the other furries unsupervised.

Oh don’t you worry, am a massive crate fan! Not worried about the crate training aspect, have been through it with enough pups upto now ?

Love Dr Beckman carpet scrubber, will search out the pet version Thankyou!

Off to investigate the hugrug mat, thanks so much!

Oh also. A hot water bottle does help them settle. We had started off with silent crate nights then all of a sudden howling!!
. It is chilly downstairs so my gamekeeper relative suggested it and the next night pup slept through.

Already on the list ? if they’re warm and cosy they definitely seem to sleep better. My princess of a Damnation (not a typo ?) is testament to that!

That stuff is insanely good!

I think you sound pretty sorted. It’s tempting to buy loads of stuff, but we have collars/leads/harnesses coming out of the cupboard from over the years, I have bags of stuff to donate! The only thing I had to get was food, but I wish I’d stuck with what I knew and wasn’t swung by the offers, took me a minute to go back to what I knew.

That’s the thing, isn’t it. Having had dogs all my life we’re pretty well set, I’m sure I’ll find some nice news toys to satisfy my itch ? I really like the eco toys from greene & Wilde- no squeakers!

What are you getting, another damnation? I will be very jealous if you are.

No, no more Damnations! My current one is 10years old and I adore her but we’ve headed down the HPR gundog route now.

We’re getting a German Longhaired Pointer pup! We already have a 3.5yr old half sister to the pup and she is an absolute delight. There are only approx 200 of the breed in the country hence the wait, and the right dog is definitely worth waiting for ?

Can't wait to see photos, they are cute pups.
I know I am a miserable old crow but please don't use puppy pads, they are so bad for the environment, just use a cloth or rag and wash it and reuse, it doesn't take that much effort and one use plastics are increasing at such a rate.

I buy items to reuse, e.g. make-up remover pads and avoid single use plastic bottles when ever possible. I travel very little, have flown for one holiday in the last 30 years and but I much prefer the convenience of puppy pads to having to leave the mess to be walked through by multiple dogs while I go and get a mop to sort it out. We all have to balance our effects, good and less so, on the environment, so I shall continue to buy and use puppy pads, I'm afraid.

ETA, re-using collars etc, we stayed with relatives in Scotland this year, taking the 3 dogs with us. We realised that the brown one was outgrowing her harness but, it really didn't matter, assitting in the coat cupboard in Scotland was a harness originally bought for one of our Rottweilers, that when she outgrew it, had been passed down to a Scottish dog who, in turn, outgrew it. It came back down to Yorkshire with us and has now been outgrown again. But we had another bigger one here, just waiting for her.:D

My message wasn't aimed at anyone in particular.
It just seems so wrong to me that the planet is struggling and that will impact on every single human in existence when things get serious and yet we all, all of us are guilty of trying to justify our own convenience driven wastefulness.
Yet even on here there are debates about who believes what is having an effect (cows etc) however we know for a fact how damaging plastics, chemical, single use products, coffee pods, etc etc are and they continue to be used for our personal benefit.
If someone has never used a puppy pad but had puppies before they probably don't need to start now

Thanks so much everyone- there will be plenty of photos when the time comes! They just look like little brown Guinea pigs at present ?

We already have whistles for working our current GLP and are very well set up for dummies and all things gundog.

Re the puppy pads being a contentious subject- I totally get that.
We have them sat there in case of oil spills as I feel that’s ‘slightly’ better for the environment than washing the oil into the watercourse. We usually just use old towels and floor cleaner for puppy messes.

I didn’t bother with a crate bed at first. I put a washable puppy pad down with some vetbed on top (pad was to soak up any accidents but she didn’t have any). I also used them in her pen to protect my carpets, she only ever had one accident in her pen but did love to tip over her water bowl. They feel like fabric so are not obviously a surface to pee on. I still use them now to line the car boot as she occasionally gets carsick.

I like the idea of the washable pads, especially for the car like you say!

I thought the Mail was invented for clearing up puppy mess? I’ve never bought puppy pads, except when I picked Ffee and her brother up from Wales I did line under the cage with them. I was driving back to Essex.
EB, are they coming from the breeder near me?

? this is true! I can’t remember the last time I saw a newspaper in real life though!

No, I believe they are breeding again in the spring though.

Pup is coming from Wiltshire- same breeder who bred our current girl ? same Dam too.

That’s true. The online version may not be so effective. ?.
How exciting, will pup be the same colour?

Could result in an embarrassing laptop repair bill… ?

Very exciting! Ivy is a joint pet but my husbands working dog. Whereas this pup will be mine to work. I’m really looking forward to having my own project again since the horse is pretty much retired.

Yes, they’re all solid brown with the odd little bit of white on chests or feet. Much less white on this line than on those nearer to you ?
