Hit & Run Animal RTA

On Wednesday 20th February 2008 at approximately 6.00 p.m. a man driving a red, older type BMW car, collided with a New Forest Pony. The accident happened at Amies Wood, Linwood, near the Red Shoot public house. The driver has not reported the accident. The pony suffered a broken leg and was found in the ditch. She was later humanely destroyed by the Agister.

A witness saw the accident but being very distressed by the accident, failed to get the registration number of the vehicle.

The vehicle would have been badly damaged in the collision. Has anyone seen this damaged vehicle - perhaps on someone’s drive or has a garage taken the vehicle for repair or possibly scrap? Because of the location and time of day, the driver is likely to be local and probably on his way home from work.

We, and the Police are keen to trace this driver. If you have any information which may help us track him down, please contact WPC Alison Tilbury at Hythe Police Station on 08450 454545 or the Verderers’ Office on 02380 282052.

OMG, I ride there. I will spread the word round my yard and keep a good eye out. This is terrible news

Sadly this happens all too often - I only live a couple of miles from where the incident happened.
The worst drivers are the local ones, who feel that just because they know the roads, that means they know what is on the road round the next bend - WRONG!

I hope they catch the driver.

I keep my horse in the New Forest area too and have recently contacted the local police and National Park authority about speeding traffic. My yard is on a busy B road that is apparently the 4th most dangerous in the forest!! They are doing speed checks apparantly but I'm overtaken frequently, when driving on open forest roads by numpty drivers that seem to have a complete disregard for the animals and the 40mph speed limit. It's very sad to see the animal casualty sign at 25 and KNOW that it must be at least a dozen more as they have'nt updated it and thats just in our area.
