Oh I've found an actual discipline there isn't a prefix for... 1-0 to me, Admin

I posted in the weekend plans thread that we had a polocrosse tournament this weekend, so I thought I'd bash up a report of sorts. I've not bothered to post any for a while, so if we could keep things pleasant, I'd be much obliged...

Anyway, on Saturday, we were training and playing silly games, mostly - tag and cat and mouse on horseback. Awesome fun - I spent the entire day running away from people and hiding in corners - especially if they were trying to throw balls at me, which is possibly not the object of polocrosse really. Between pony games and rain showers, we were doing unmounted training, which is surprisingly inventive. Polocrosse people seem to have a whole set of racquet games they play and torture people with - and at which I was utterly hopeless. Highlights included having my name screamed repeatedly at me while I stare blankly into space - resulting in a ball to my face, well deserved! - and an accidental proposition of marriage to one of the coaches (poor, poor chap).

Sunday was tournament day - playing actual games :eek3: We were playing in quite mixed ability teams - me at one end of the incompetent spectrum, and others trying to redress the balance and introduce some quality into the field, which worked really well for me as it meant I was being fed a constant stream of instruction and help from some of my team mates. The fact that I ignored almost everything they said and failed to catch or pass competently at all during an entire 30 minutes of play is irrelevant ;) I was having quite a lot of fun meandering around the pitch trying (at times, hopelessly) to mark my opposing number. During one chukka, I was playing as the number 1 (the only attacking player allowed in the goal area) and was patiently set up by my competent midfield team mate about a dozen times, until I managed to get a couple of goals in - to my extreme delight.

Sunday was rounded off with a demo game by some of the more competent players and a couple of the coaches showing off their (utterly insane) skills. Fergus and I were deemed sane enough to act as unofficial umpire (with no actual power, just there to retrieve the ball after goals and throw it back into play) so we got to chase them up and down the pitch, running away in terror, and getting a really rather good view of the action. Best fun I've had in ages - and Fergus very much agreed.

Anyway, that's what we've been up to this weekend. If you find yourself looking at a chance to have a go at polocrosse, I'd totally recommend it. It's an awesome sport, which seems to be run be fabulous (if possibly insane and terrifying) people.

Sounds bonkers, but lots of fun! No idea what half that stuff is you're talking about but glad you enjoyed it haha. Love your face in some of these pics. Look like you need a v well behaved and responsive polio to do it too, well done !

Sounds amazing fun! I'd really love a go with the big moose - I think he'd love it, but I'm thinking he may be a bit large (getting my excuses in early :p ).
Do you have to have a small, useful sort of horse to join in or are elephant crosses accepted? If it helps, he would look good in the bandages....?
Fergus looks fantastic btw

I'm not sure polio is a great asset in many sporting events :eek3: But the proper polocrosse ponies are incredible - so fast and twisty and responsive. Ah yes - my face is always a delight in photos ;) Thanks!

Thanks - he too looks very good in bandages! Er, no I mean, they say any horse can play. I mean it's not like horseball where you need to get down to the floor - you can theoretically just have a longer racquet, I think. I certainly wouldn't let it stop you having a go if you get a chance - I'm playing on a hobbit, for heaven's sake! :D

Well that's all the encouragement I need - I'm going to go have me a google

Excellent report JFTD :cool3: Looks a lot of fun - wish I was as young and supple to have a go, but sadly my days of bending etc are just about vanished.
More soon I hope? ;)

Thanks - it's awesome. I'm sure you'd enjoy it... ;) I don't know - other than training, not sure when the next tournament I'd be able to play in will be. I'm really going to have to up my game quite a lot :eek3:

Get on with it! If you're in the East, I can help with that. Otherwise see links below ;)

Sounds like you had a blast. Meeza want to play. Are old codgers allowed?

You'd be annoyingly good at it. You're also not in a bad area - there's loads going on in the Rugby-Southam sort of areas, and you can hire ponies for it too.

And I'd enjoy seeing your thighs in white jeans too ;)

Played polocrosse a few times, and yep I would highly recommend it. its amazing fun!

Great report and brill photos, you do look terrified in some of them alright, but it sounds like fun was had by all.

When's the next one?

Sorry to disappoint. I spend most of my time in black leather these days :p

Need to drop the right elbow a bit more dear - and apportion the weight over the inside of the seat along with dropping the right knee - all to lower the gravity, which will make bike tip in more & allow for a quicker exit, and of course quicker lap times :wink3:

Of this that you are telling me I know. That pic was taken on lap one of my first ever track day. I managed to melt the rather poor road tyres the bike had by the end of the day. Also suffered brake fade (front) so bike now has improved calipers, pads and discs.
PS I'm also far too old to be riding that bike but I kinda love it in smallish doses.

Never too old to ride any bike - or horse, PM :biggrin3:
Altho I have the 1198r, I actually prefer the older 2 valver 800 to ride on track as much more nimble, especially somewhere like Cadwell round the woodland part, I can sit there giggling much of the day :)

Apologies JFTD for hi-jacking yr thread x I cannot see any club near me, perhaps you can advise? Would love to watch local stuff :)

Not sure - have some training coming up but matches at my level / level of sanity are hard to come by ;) I'm not actually scared of playing - I'm scared of messing up and letting team mates down, which unfortunately means I invariably do screw it up. Idiot! But yes, you know the joys then - it's brilliant and I love it :)

Wow :D :D :D

No worries - I've hijacked enough threads (mostly about thighs, too) to deserve it! Solent maybe? They're Hampshire, I think - they were up here as coaches, and were scary-awesome. Or there's a tournament this weekend in Kent at Jason Webb's. They have a club. I might go watch some of that, actually.

Thanks, prob a bit of a trot at present, but will keep in mind :)

That looks like fun. I was the token incompetent member of a lacrosse team a few years ago - are the skills similar? my biggest weakness was running (not one of life's naturals at running) so thinking that if I replace my legs with a horses I would be better than I was at lacrosse :-)

Haha well, it's been 15 years since I last played lacrosse (ironically, I was one of the better ones at that back then!) so I'm not really in a position to comment, but one of the chaps there is a lacrosse player learning to ride, and he seems to think it's helpful!

This old codger had a go summer 2015. Zero talent, but it was a lot of fun.

I actually (accidentally) caught the ball in a line out once and was so confused and I just stood there. Catching wasn't something I ever mastered - I was more the galloping about madly kind of player.

Ahh I've had that happen in training (when it's being thrown in from the ground, not a horse - we're not tall enough for that!). I end up staring around looking for it on the floor while it's in my racquet! I'm hoping the catching thing will get easier :p

Looks so much fun you guys look fantastic!

ROR are running a have a go day on 10th June down in Warwickshire. I'm taking three of my ex racers down who all play horseball (so hoping they will be OK with it) for some of my friends to have a go with me!! Literally cannot wait! I'm hoping that they have some extra long rackets as I've drawn the short straw on 17.2hh Big Sam!

It's huge amounts of fun. I hope you enjoy it... I'm sure your horses will be fine, if they're all used to horseball. Perhaps it'll even manage to lure you across into the light... :p
