Oh I've found an actual discipline there isn't a prefix for... 1-0 to me, Admin
I posted in the weekend plans thread that we had a polocrosse tournament this weekend, so I thought I'd bash up a report of sorts. I've not bothered to post any for a while, so if we could keep things pleasant, I'd be much obliged...
Anyway, on Saturday, we were training and playing silly games, mostly - tag and cat and mouse on horseback. Awesome fun - I spent the entire day running away from people and hiding in corners - especially if they were trying to throw balls at me, which is possibly not the object of polocrosse really. Between pony games and rain showers, we were doing unmounted training, which is surprisingly inventive. Polocrosse people seem to have a whole set of racquet games they play and torture people with - and at which I was utterly hopeless. Highlights included having my name screamed repeatedly at me while I stare blankly into space - resulting in a ball to my face, well deserved! - and an accidental proposition of marriage to one of the coaches (poor, poor chap).
Sunday was tournament day - playing actual games :eek3: We were playing in quite mixed ability teams - me at one end of the incompetent spectrum, and others trying to redress the balance and introduce some quality into the field, which worked really well for me as it meant I was being fed a constant stream of instruction and help from some of my team mates. The fact that I ignored almost everything they said and failed to catch or pass competently at all during an entire 30 minutes of play is irrelevant
I was having quite a lot of fun meandering around the pitch trying (at times, hopelessly) to mark my opposing number. During one chukka, I was playing as the number 1 (the only attacking player allowed in the goal area) and was patiently set up by my competent midfield team mate about a dozen times, until I managed to get a couple of goals in - to my extreme delight.
Sunday was rounded off with a demo game by some of the more competent players and a couple of the coaches showing off their (utterly insane) skills. Fergus and I were deemed sane enough to act as unofficial umpire (with no actual power, just there to retrieve the ball after goals and throw it back into play) so we got to chase them up and down the pitch, running away in terror, and getting a really rather good view of the action. Best fun I've had in ages - and Fergus very much agreed.
Anyway, that's what we've been up to this weekend. If you find yourself looking at a chance to have a go at polocrosse, I'd totally recommend it. It's an awesome sport, which seems to be run be fabulous (if possibly insane and terrifying) people.
