Do you have oaks in your fields? Mine has recently come up in hives and I think it might be from rolling where oak processionary moth nests have come down.

One of ours came out in hives which we put down to Moles own brand chaff so never used again.

We avoid anything with 'ingredients', having had problems over the years with a variety of feeds, including the latest; ForagePlus winter balancer. I think the problem was mainly caused by linseed. Anyway lesson learned - again!

I would remove all bucket feed, see if hives improve, if they do reintroduce 1 feed at a time slowly. If don't improve leave off feed and change bedding. If no improvement change hay then poss swap stables if stabled.....

They r such a worry . .. if only happening in winter and rugged, change rug !!

Good luck

I had a horse who had an allergy to a certain type of sugar (diagnosed by Prof Knottenbelt) and he used to come up in massive welts all over his body at certain times of year or when he went in certain fields.

I would remove all hard food and then introduce one of: grass nuts, oats, wheatfeed, bran. Starting with grass nuts if he's never shown any issues eating grass.

I would stop all hard feed for 3 weeks, monitoring carefully. Then I would start by feeding Agrobs WeisenCobs, or similar because they have nothing holding them Together and have a mixture of meadowgrasses that are not so common here. The easiest way not to feed 'ingredients' is to feed straights. We feed Aloe Vera Juice rather than a balancer, as it provides a number of vitamins & mins, whilst being a single ingredient food.
I would actively avoid soya, alfalfa, wheatfeed, linseed and anything that horses would not eat if given the choice in the wild, because it won't suit their digestive system.
