hey all,

well autumn now not been worked for a week and half due to coming up in massive hives all over - some of them are huge and are doughnut shaped and feel quite warm! She had something similar last summer which we attributed to a change in shampoo. This time however nothing has changed! When the lumps came up I hadnt washed any of her stuff, not changed her feed, bedding etc so im baffled as to what it is. They have gone down slightly now but not gone yet. I've swapped her from her HW nz to a mediu weight one as the temps have risen a bit and didnt want her getting to hot not helping things! Vet has suggested a steriod injection ONLY if they start oozing or anything which they havent looked like doing for a minute. he also said he wouldnt bother with allergy tests etc because they hardly ever comme up with a definative answer.

So I suppose my question is, is there anything else I can do? or anything the supplement her diet which will help her get rid of them? apart from being horrid for her (although actually she seems unaffected) its a bloomin nuisance as its interuppted training and competing!

One of the problems is that allergies/intolerances can appear from no-where, esp. if the animal has already got an issue (shampoo) It may be something that she has had for years with no problem, or could be a different bale of hay/haylage/ shavings, from the same batch! It may work to feed piriton, or to use epsom salts to try and 'flush' the system through. Hope it sorts out soon. :)

hmmm someone else has mentioned epsom salts..... might see if the chemist has any and give it a go.

how much piriton would a horse need and how do you give it? Shes ISH 16.1?

Mare at our yard was allergic to barley straw but fine with Wheat... any chance you couldve inadvertantly picked up a different type of hay or straw?

My filly was treated with Bute for her hives.. greatly improved overnight and was completely fine in 36 hours. She looked like elephant woman too - her head swelled so much. Cheap and worth a try? we never found the cause of hers either...

I have problems over here with the horses having fairly drastic reactions to insect bites, i use a lavender wash from barrier animal care and it is excellent for soothing the skin.
