... accept photos for horse adverts where people are riding without a hat. Especially when they're jumping.

it looks unprofessional and sloppy, I know it is being judgmental but I would not even enquire about a horse if the rider could not be bothered to dress properly to ride-what else can they not be bothered to do?

I would suggest because it's a bad example to kids for starters.

I doubt there are kids looking through the horse and hound ads, thinking "oh, look, a hatless rider, must try that "......kids today grow up wearing hats, everyone around them does and an occasional ad with a hatless rider is not going to lead the kids astray !

Wearing hats is very prevalent in this country, compared to say spain or portugal (or even some parts of the US). I think the uk probably has one of the highest rates of hat wear.

Seeing as the internet is completely pervasive and images of the above are certainly out there, I'd say the personal influence on young children through wearing hats being an accepted part of riding is probably more effective. Plus as aspirational role models go I don't think random jumper man is going to exert more sway than say Carl Hester!

How judgemental could you be? I do not wear jodhpurs or long boots to ride. However my horses could not be better cared for

I see it as a plus. The rider is obviously convinced that the horse is safe.

I never ride without a hat, but it's none of my business if anyone else does.

It's for parents to tell their children they must wear a hat to ride, it's not the responsibility of the entire adult population.

most people I know or have known who have or do ride without a hat seem to think they are invicible-they get on horses they do not know hatless or on the known raving loons thinking it will never happen to them

I certainly agree with your second two points whole heartedly. As a non hat wearer 99% of the time I am quite likely to be photographed without, and neither my horses nor I are sloppy nor unprofessional. I do not get on a horse with the primary thought that I must set an example to the "youth".

Agree with this. I dont think its a "bad influence" as such as really its up to any kids parents to demand they wear a hat. I know my child always will, no arguement! I do think it looks very unprofessional though and it probably would put me off going to view a horse. I just think it looks like the person is probably happy to take too many risks with riding in general.

This!

When people were replying to my sharer advert for my girl I rejected them without any further thought if I looked on their facebook and saw them riding with no hat.

In my honest opinion and with no offence meant - it just looks chavvy to me.

Well that rules you and Twiggy out from buying any continental trained Grand Prix dressage horse then :D

I don't quite understand why a sloppily dressed rider would put people off going to view a horse. You're not buying the rider!

I have on many occasions ridden in pyjamas/jeans/shorts and a bikini top. My horses way of going was no different from when i wore breeches and boots.

This constant obsession on here about other people wearing/not wearing hats baffles me. I mostly do, but sometimes don't. Its my head, why should total strangers be bothered.
Before anyone mentions the drain on NHS should the hatless rider have an accident, just make sure you're not a smoker, a drinker or are over weight before you use that argument to justify the busy body attitude.
If a horse rider should die from a head injury once in a blue moon it would be all over the media.
Hundreds die every day from alcohol rotted liver, cream cake induced heart attacks and smoke poisoned bodies.
So when we all have pure clean bodies, avoid the temptation of booze, fags and McDonald's, then feel free to have a pop at the hatless rider, because I know what causes more death and cost to the NHS.

To clarify for me, It's not about the sloppiness really or how it looks. I don't care how people *look* at all. It's more that if I'm getting someone to share my horse (I don't charge I just wanted someone to exercise) I want them to be safety conscious and sensible and not wearing a hat is sort of the opposite of that for me ;) I'd doubt they'd wear high viz on the road either? or is that a sterotype of mine!

I wont hack out with anyone that doesn't wear a hat as if their brain ends up smeared on the pavement I'd rather not be there!

Oh Ribbons you did make me laugh out loud. "Cream cake induced heart attacks!" :D You're quite right of course; the percent of horse riders who die because they don't wear a hat is absolutely miniscule compared to the huge amount of deaths arising from the many complications suffered by fat people, smokers and drinkers.

won't give your brain damage and is highly unlikely to be life threatening though is it?
Ever seen someone with a severed Achilles tendon .or had to spend the night in A&E with them . I am fully on side with wearing hats ,but I have also seen the other equine accidents. Being crippled for life is pretty severe too.

that is true but like wearing a seat belt it is so easy to pop at hat on-no addictions etc to consider

But what proportion of the population rides? The biggest cause of death of young women is young men, having an accident in the car. The second cause of death in young women is a horse related accident. Pretty dangerous really.

also true but then we can go all the way to say body protectors must be worn too-I suppose everyone has a limit mine is I wont ride without a riding hat that fits on my head and I feel people that do are a bit daft-personally I always wear jodphur boots and leather chaps but that cos my legs get blistered if i don't and a previous riding accident has made me a bit protective of my feet

Why don't you wear long boots and a body protector?

The sad thing is that us old gits who have seen all the accidents , and say ,hat boots gloves , full length shirts , base this on sad experience. Watching my young rider ,bravely trying to scrub the grit from her battered face ,in A&E ,because it would leave a permanent "Tattoo"practically had me in tears. We dont come out with this safety stuff for fun ,but because we have seen people we love get smashed up.
