Looking for a pony for my daughter (and sometimes my 9yr old son) that has to be safe, a real kick along type. Daughter is a nervous 8 yr old and quite tall but thin and light. At the moment she is riding my 15.1hh cob and feels safe on her, and doesn't look very small on her! but she needs her own pony now, obviously she is fine on the lead rein but cob is a bit big for her!

A pony has come up matching what am after and sounds perfect, right price etc but its only 11.2hh, its a welsh sec A. I know she will quickly outgrow the pony in another year or so or possibly look a little big even now?!!
BUT if its as good as they say i know she would soon gain her confidence and i know these ponies can be hard to come by.
Do i take a punt?!! or wait for something a bit bigger to come along? ideally was looking for something between 12 - 13.2hh...............

I personally wouldn't go above 13hh even with taller children they just don't have the a strength (a generalisation I know) the other thing to think about is that for many lead rein classes (even fun local shows) and 1st ridden classes the pony must be 12.2hh or less. 11.2 might be too small but I'd go for the right pony so it maybe worth it for u. My daughter is now 10 and still needs a steady 1st pony after a bit of a loss in confidence, she has a 12.2 and still has plenty of growing room (she's reasonably tall for her age). Not sure where u are but there are a few about the £1k mark on the pony club website (some are much more but they aren't 1st ponies) if u go for the Welsh A (do u know the pony?) I'd say you'd get a couple of years with her at least. Sorry probably not much help!

I would buy it if the pony is the right one otherwise. See what your son looks like on it and then you will know roughly how long it will last her, unless they are wildly different builds!

Yeah thats what i was thinking strength wise, hence why she feels confident on the cob she is far to strong for little hands!

I may just go for the section a, i don't know the pony personally but i know the lady selling her and had a pony off her in the past so she's honest.
It just sounds like a nice pony that my daughter can really gain some confidence on and can be led from my cob if need be.
Will have a think on it tonight :)

Yeah son is similar build!
I may go up after the weekend and have a look at it.

my daughter is 11 and still rides her 12hh welsh B, granted it is a chunky one which takes up the leg, but she will have to move on to a bigger pony this year.
At 8 your daughter can do FR and LR classes on a 12hh or under, and if it's M&M for a good few years.
