Hmmm.... shouldnt the Queen really be setting a better example?

Love the photo and hope i a still able to be out riding at 85 (i would be wearing hat and body protector though)
Also her horses are so well schooled it would most likely never put a hoof wrong, and at the end of the day it was most likey a stroll around the park for the photographs.
Lets hope she is still able to do it all again next year

I think if you are still riding at 85 then you can wear what you want as long as you dont do a Lady Godiva and inflict the wrinkliness on the public.

Everyone knows the Queen never wears a hat, it doesnt mean other copy her as she isnt a fashion or high level riding icon for young kids and even the kids who were with her are wearing hats as they should!

Just great to see her back on board, and like many of us she has realised that the lower altitude of a solid coblet is very comforting for our middle and later years!

NO she is the Queen and can do what she wants, rather than wingeing about her not wearing a hat, people should be impressed and suportive that she is still riding at 85!! its incredible and a testiment to what a wonderful person she is!

I agree that it's a lovely photo, really made me smile.

To discuss the hat thing though, is there a H+H double-standard going on here? Post a photo of anyone else riding without a hat and WWIII starts up. So if it's OK for the queen to do it, what qualifies anyone else to be able to post a happy but hatless photo? Someone said at her age she can wear what she likes, so at what age can us riders start to wear what we like without getting torn to shreds? Or maybe the queen, with all her responsibilities, should take even more care of her head than the rest of us?

For comparison, what would the reaction be if I posted a picture of my Parelli friend, who is in her 60's, riding hatless and with her granddaughter (hatted!) on a pony beside her?

I treat the queen's choice of headgear (or lack of) the same as anyone elses. If they are an adult, it's their funeral (excuse the pun)..

It's OK Kitsune, I'm just going to keep a link to this thread for future "hatless" debates. I am of the same opinion as you.

If she's stupid enough not to wear a hat then that's her choice. Maybe the royals have thicker skulls than us plebs ;P

How extremely disrespectful you are , our Queen is a wonderful person,it is entirely her business as to if she wears a hat and messes her perm up or not .

i think the pic is fine, its personal preference and no i dont think she should wear a hat for the sake of all those red tape wangling, rules and regs wannabes! good on her, and yes love the native breeds, gorgeous horses! good on her riding still in her 80's !

Wearing riding hats is not something i belive other people can comment on, if you choose to wear one, do it, all the time. if others choose not to whilst schooling/riding at home etc that to me is compeltely their own choice!

I think if you fall off at 85 its bad news whether you've got a hat on or not..

That said there are worse fates than falling off your horse and dying! Sounds like an ok way to go to me!! She is an adult and its her decision. Ive respect for anyone who is still riding at that age!

Lovely picture, and lovely ponies. Such a natural looking shot.

Some might argue that by not wearing a hat and by starting this sort of discussion all over, she is doing more for promoting wearing safe headgear than not.

Another vote for a lovely photo, I think its the happiest I've seen her possibly ever :D

Well I have to admit when I learnt to ride (at a riding school) decades ago there was not a law to say you had to wear a hat. It was lovely to gallop around the fields with the wind in your hair. Yes I wear one now but can quite understand why she doesn't her choice.

I wonder if Shills has seen this thread I mean her majesty is riding by choice A COB :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:p:p

^agreed. I was like wait what? 85?! bl**dy h**l seriously you fall off at 85 you are screwed hat or not. fair play her getting her royal leg over once again at 85! if i make it that far il *try* to do the same... i very much doubt it tho lol!:D

Im just starting to ride again at 40+ ahem... so am delighted to know i may have 45 years riding left, not too late. Great photo and yes a Queenly smile bigger than i saw at Kate/Wills wedding!

Lovely pic!

Re hat vs no hat - whilst I accept that it's down to individual choice, my argument FOR wearing a hat is because quite simply:

no hat = increase chance of brain damage= increase chance of pain/upset/stress/burden on loved ones who then have to live with the repercussions of your individual choice.

At the Queen's age she has very little to lose in that she's already a ripe old age having had a very "full" life. If she falls off and ends up needing extra care it's not like her family themselves will have to do it so the impact on them will be less than it would be for the loved ones of us commoners who don't have royal connections.

I think that made sense. I know what I mean anyway.

Here here!! I hope I'm still able to get on a horse at her age...blimey I struggle some days at 40+ years younger than her!!! Yeah sure she really should wear a hat but if I get to 85 I'll damn well do as I please and if anyone dare tell me otherwise they'll get told where to shove it!! ;)

It's quite a big scarf she's wearing, maybe it's a customized hat that's been made to look like a scarf? ;)
She should shoot her groom for the dodgy stirrups though!
And shouldn't the environment be brought up here - should they really be trampling all those lovely bluebells?:D
p.s. I bought my first horse from a lady called Elizabeth, (who I have been friends with ever since). She was named after the Queen as she was born on exactly the same day. She still rides too! She is one amazing, fantastic lady (as is our Queen). As a child she even used to go to school on her pony!

Isn't it amazing that there is sport you can still do competitively in your 80s!

I reckon the queen borrowed one of his driving ponios for the day.
