Hmmm.... shouldnt the Queen really be setting a better example?

If you look at the bigger uncropped photo, it looks to me like the pony is standing unevenly rather than her stirrups being unlevel.:)
 
Well my gran is almost the same age and it's not easy to get her to change habits, and you've got to be brave to suggest such a thing!

Out of interest- all the anti hatless brigade (I'm not against hats, I almost always wear mine, but I certainly don't try and preach to others)

What do u think about actors not wearing hats in films? Should they all be forced to wear hats to the correct standard?
 
I think the Queen is old enough to take her own risks and make her own mind up.

However I think children should be told to put a hat on at all times. And people should also have to wear them on public highways IMO regardless of age.
 
All this talk about head scarfs and hats reminds me of the episode of "Only Fools & Horses" when Del was trying to sell scull caps with scarfs on top as "Trotters Turbans" LMAO :)

The Queen has always bred Fell ponies,which her husband used to drive four-in-hand.She also breeds top class Highlands,which are used on the hills for stag carrying ,shown extremely successfully and used for riding as well.
 
It's perfectly normal for adults not to wear hats in Portugal - they'd think we were mental to even mention the fact that the QUEEN isn't wearing one :p
Interestingly, my RI told me yesterday that the cremello colouring is known as "isabel" in Portugal, after Elizabeth I, who according to Portuguese legend only had horses of that colour. I'm pretty sure she didn't and I do wonder if my RI maybe got her confused with another Queen Isabel, but I thought it was a cool story!
 
I understood she had stopped riding out, so glad to see her still doing her own thing, no doubt anything she rides will be pretty bombproof.
PS I don't expect to kick the bucket if I fall off just cos I am over 50, (err 60), it all depends how hard I hit the ground really.
Palace sources tell me (off the record) that she likes to wear a tiara when riding out, which is why she can't do the hard hat thing. Anyway she has been riding for 80 years, so I expect she knows a thing or two about horses.
PPS Prince Phillip "invented" driving competition to include dressage, marthon and cones, he still turns up at the big events, as a spectator, with four in hand fell ponies. He no longer competes.

I think she is amazing still riding at 85 - I'm almost 60 and sitting at the computer with a cupof tea and two more Nurofen trying to tame my grumpy back and hip.

Pony has off hind back which will make the stirrup on that side appear longer.

Dodn't think the ponies looked fat - just lovely weight for the breed.

Wouldn't you just love to work in the royal stables. :D

I'm afraid I'm in the club that couldn't give a fig what adults wear on their heads whilst riding. I expect children to be wearing hats and that to be enforced by parents, it's down to the parents to set the example as far as I'm concerned. :) I don't think this debate will ever be concluded!

Anyway, I wish I could see the photo larger. Tis cute.

I agree completely. What a wonderful picture it is.
 
It's a lovely pic, showing a doting Granny doing something she clearly loves with her Grandchildren. The children have hats on, that's the most important thing. She's old enough to know the risks, so it's her choice. Would be different if the children weren't wearing one. She looks so relaxed.

I saw some of her Highland ponies at Balmoral once, it's great to still see them being used on the hill. I would LOVE to be one of her grooms! (If I was younger, had better childcare, and a healthier back.....*sigh*) :D
 
Nice pic.....let's face it, she's ridden all these years without a hat, and the most important thing is that the children have their hats on, live and let live I say.
 
What a wonderful photo! The Queen never looks happier than when she is on horseback. Can't wait to see pictures like this which include her great grandchildren too, I think the first is expected this year!

I have got princess Anne's autobiography, and it seems to be tradition for the royal children to have pretty ordinary ponies. There are some wonderful stories about Princess Anne riding out with Mum and big Brother, as well as some super photos.
 
QR sorry if I am repeating myself but people have been dinging on about the Queen not wearing a hat for years...I'm not ancient but I remember it when I was a kid and I am sure it was going on long before that.
 
I saw the photo in the paper and thought it was lovely too. So nice to see the Queen looking happy!

I think she has said that she is at her happiest when with her horses. i remember watching the programme Alan Titchmarsh did about her and her equines and she was positively beaming all through it!

According to the paper she is going to have to give up riding soon as she is having an operation. It was the Daily Mail though.................

Her not wearing a hat is neither here nor there and entirely her choice.

If the worst did happen, she's had a good innings and she'd go out doing what she loved.

Plus, we have the very capable Charles waiting to step up to the plate :rolleyes::eek::D:D.
