hmmm tricky situation, puzzled about what to do

Hemir keeps coming in with lumps/bare skin, which are caused my tics, he doesn't get itchy and yes they can cause infection and we have the strongest thing we can buy to put on them, but he keeps coming in with these 'patches' about the size of 10p pieces!! Most are in his mane, but he starting to get them under his chin, on his chest and also down his legs

I'm thinking about getting a full face 'zorro mask', one of those lycra things (you know the ones that i'm talking about

) And then getting a fly sheet with neck cover.

But i'm not sure if you can leave the lycra hoods on in the field

Or weather he would get too hot and frustrated with having to have a rug on in the summer...the tics/flies aren't bothering him, but i was thinking this might help to prevent these nasty patches of gunky stuff, where i'm almost having to cut his mane as it's so bad

should have got some pics first

have been cleaning them daily, then putting purple spray on them (then a thing called 'betadine') and was thinking about sudo cream, as that would smother the tics...am possibly going to smother his legs in that tomorrw....to see what happens!! The others aren't being affected by any of this, the tics don't seem to like them

I wouldnt turnout in a lycra hood, remember a horse a few years ago running into a fence as he couldnt see, it had somehow twisted round. Id buy a good fly rug and mask instead.

Do you feed him garlic? It works wonders as an added insect repellant.

I need the mask not to do up with velcrow

he can somehow get them undone!! so if i can find one, then that would be the best solution!!! Hemir will walk around with the lycra vest over his ears and eyes, and not care about them!! lol!

yep!! He's fed quite a bit of garlic, we are just waiting for a 'stronger' one to come over from England!!

Oh right, sorry that was the only thing I could think of!!! We even give it to our one ewe, it seems to work for her as well as the horses.

Had another thought, coal-tar, we used to buy it from a local chemist (people use it for psoriasis) Used it with good effect on a pony with sweet itch, you may of course have also tried this

what does it smell like .... may sound wierd, but not sure if we've tried it or not lol bought something in France that has the same sort of description, but it's the smell that sticks in my mind!! lol

Lots of ticks here on Exmoor too, my horses keep them on their faces. I spoke to my vet about it last week and he recommended Frontline, sprayed onto a cloth or sponge and wipe the horse's face with it. Or spray a line of it from top of mane to the top of the tail. I've tried it and it works, and no bad effects.
