Can anyone help? For about the last 5 days every time I take my horses stable rugs off in a morning he is desperate to itch/bite at his left hand side (just behind the saddle flap). He is there for ages until I stop him. Today I have noticed that it looks swollen. Any ideas? Is this swelling due to him biting? He is groomed every day and has clean rugs and bedding. Never had this before.

Yeah I did think that it could be that, so have downgraded his rugs today (summer sheet and poly). He is normally a bit of a 'wetty' so rug him up. He is fully clipped though so dont want him getting chilly. Will be interesting to see how he is in the morning. Do you think the swelling is just from him biting himself so much?

My horse has been terribly itchy recently. I thought it might have been the alpha A oil as some people said the alfafa could make him itch so I took him off it. That seemed to improve things a bit but he was still biting his sides occasionally so I removed his rugs altogether (he is unclipped and now has sufficient weight on him for me not to worry). He seems lots better now. I have also bought some louse powder as I did think it could be that but as he seems to have stopped itching I haven't as yet used it.
Roll on summer - I'm sure they'll be better when their coats have come out!

I am also having problems with a lumpy itchy horse. He is in a lightweight rug now (and fully clipped) as its his usual heat bumps he always gets this time of year.

Someone else in Competition Riders said give Bute for a couple of days as this is supposed to settle it.
