Blurb says, 'How does the mother signal, to her foal, her unwillingness to allow nursing?
The mother will stomp her leg, lay back her ears, move away from the foal, and sometimes nip. The mother's nature is to give fair warning to her young without causing injury.'
That, or she'll wham the foal with a bl@@dy hard kick or two. I'm not convinced!
I find my foals have tended to wean themselves - just as long as they've had other babies/youngsters for company and distraction. By 6 months I can lead the mare out of the field and the babies haven't paid the slightest notice. Maybe I've just been lucky
