Hobbles...

Yes, Jason Webb teaches all his horses to hobble, and it's part of his young horse starting process I think, unless the owner requests otherwise. I think it's a pretty sensbile thing to teach, as long as you know what you're doing. Even if you never actually hobble your horse in the future. I can loop ropes round the legs of all of mine and "lead them by the leg".
Say you're out riding and your horse steps into a loop of wire that some numpty has left laying in the undergrowth. The horse that understands pressure around the legs will just stand and let you get off to deal with it.
Sometimes it's useful to think outside the box?

Had to buy some hobbles for a cheecky little stallion, for when he was turned out, as even with electric fencing a ft of the hedge and a hedge a good 5 ft high, he would jump out. We put them on him for when out, with water near by, and we thought 'we got him now', but within two minutes of having them on he cantered off and still jumped the hedge out, so we took them off and moved the electric fence to about 3 ft away, and he bounced it, so back on the hobbles went and off he went again. Tried him in different fields, and it was always the same.

Ah, that makes sense, he re-started mine for me. We've been stuck in a wooden mounting block (dont ask) and he got cast in a 10 acre field, legs stuck in wire fence (again, dont ask!) and both times waited patiently to be freed.

Yep, that might explain it.

Maybe hobbling isn't such a bad idea after all?
