Hi, my girl was kicked in the hock area at the weekend. Did first aid to wound on Sunday and waited but was quite swollen on Monday and so called vet who came out. She was bandaged up and stabled for a couple of days to see how develops and on antibiotics. Vet said worst case scenario could be a small fracture in the hock or simply an infection. Advised that I see what leg is like today and take it from there. So I took bandage off in the morning and leg was nice and slim, she was not lame. As she is very nervous alone in the yard I decided to turn her back out, would well covered up to avoid new infection. Antibiotics still ongoing. Tonight the leg was still slim but I discovered still a bit of heat in the affected area. Tried to ring vet but could not get through anymore. I decided to leave horse in the field tonight. Now wondering, should there still be heat by now? Will try vet in the morning if same or worse but would like some views in meantime, please. No obvious swelling noticed anymore... Thanks
 
May be worth getting a few sachets of Norodine of your vet to be on the safe side....if there is an infection there it will nip it in the bud. We lost a horse last year with this injury. We thought we had cleared the infection but infact it had infected his sinovial pouch flush didnt work and neither did the steroids as it was too far gone. I bought him with the injury too so insurance wouldnt cover. Always better to be safe than sorry when it comes to something close to a joint even if it look superficial.

Hi sorry maybe it wasn't clear what I said - she has been treated with Norodine since Monday and the course is still ongoing til Saturday, I was just not sure if there should STILL be heat in the area yesterday. The fact that the swelling had gone down so well and she was not lame however suggested that she did not have any fracture in the hock area. What you say about losing a horse like that is scary. Glad that I got the vet out soon and hope it will all help.

Will see what I find this morning and call vet if unsure, thanks.

I hope your horse has made a recovery.

The same happened to me but I was not so fortunate. Two weeks after he got the cut, one of the grooms went to take him out to the field and he could not put weight on his foot. He has had an expensive operation, been on treatment for the last six weeks and still no sign of it getting any better.

The vet had seen him the day he got the cut but still the joint got infected. My horse appeared fine till up to that morning so you just never know.

It looks like we will have to put him to sleep. If only I knew what I knew now.
