My back lady (she's a sports massage therapist) is concerned that Axels bad back is caused by a hock problem and has advised me to ring the vet.

I'm really worried now, that he has OCD or something. He's never been lame at all behind, but I can't help thinking the worst

Sounds like what I was like about 4 weeks ago. Brought my mare to the vet and their opinion was not great confirmation combined with slight bone spavin - nothing to worry about and if she was a bit sore, give her some bute.

Think positive - it might not be as bad as you think.

Sounds reasonable, most recurrent back problems stem from a horse guarding a limb. Sort the problem and you'll save yourself a fortune on physio!!!

Hmmm sorry to say but this is exactly what happened with Star - kept getting back problems then eventually grumpy to work. Had back sorted each time and eventually got vet in to check her over - and like you, Star was never lame as such. But upon flexion tests on hinds she showed up lame on right hind and x-rays, nerve blocks later she has been diagnosed with start of spavin in lower joint.

Had treatment for it the other week, not beginning to introduce work again and she is having weekly back treatments also to get that sorted now

Might be worth getting your vet to check....

OCD in hocks doesn't always cause lameness until it is VERY advanced. My horse was sound on flexion tests even when his hock was severely inflamed caused by an OCD lesion.

Anyway, if you catch it early, it is treatable and the prognosis is good. My horse has recently had an arthroscopy and had the loose cartilage removed, and is doing well. Fingers crossed for your horse!
