I moved my horse to a new yard recently. He is in a smaller stable than he is used to but they are trying to find a bigger one for me ASAP and he seems to have settled very well.

We put rubber matting through most of the stable but left one big corner as we didnt have a piece that would fit. He has a big bed of shavings but has still managed to hurt himself on his hock. I think he's done this when he has got up from lying down and banged his leg on the floor and because he is fully clipped, he's taken the skin off one of his hocks. We immediately put rubber matting down when we found the wound on his hock and he seemed fine.

I rode him on Wednesday and he felt uncomfortable so I gave him a couple of days off and kept the wound clean and applied savlon to it twice a day.

I rode him again last night and he was almost lame on the leg in trot and canter, so I got off him and looked at him on a lunge and he is fine in walk but not in anything faster. He's almost wincing and I think the sand from the arena is irritating it.

How do I get a wound like this to heal? It has dried up but it isn't scabbing over, and everytime he moves it could open up again. Im not sure whether to put him out in the field or not. Im completely confused. Im certainly not going to ride him until he seems happier.

Help! and Thank you in advance for reading my long and boring story! xx

Possibly get the vet??
you have to be so careful with wounds on joints, im hypersensitive about hock wounds!!
Even though you have been cleaning it, it couldv got some crap in it.
best to get the vet IMO
I nearly lost my mare to a hock injury, she lacerated her tendon sheath so infection would of meant her bein pts.
not saying that thats the case with all hock injuries.
Iv always been told if its on a joint get the vet out,

hope he's ok soon

i dont think you could really do anything as i imagine it would keep opening as he moved, like splitting the scab kinda thing.

I'm sure someone has a bizzare method of keeping hocks clean

I think thats the best thing to do until it heals, well its what i'd do anyway. if its not too big a wound it should heal in good time.

If it's just a superficial wound, in other words no likelihood of becoming a joint infection, then Equaide is useful because it is a paint-on solution that aids healing and seals the wound off from contamination. So it's handy for areas that are difficult to bandage.

I was first recommended it on this forum and have found it really useful to have in my first aid box.

or if you are really worried you could put on a hock boot and turn him out, and then remove hock boot when kept in, so the cut gets some air?

oh and you could use honey on it, very very good at keeping cuts clean and helps heal them

hi i would use colloidal silver 10ppm it will stop infection and heal it up fast and it does'nt sting when applied, put some in a trigger spray bottle and spray it well three times a day,you will notice a big change in 24 hour's .
hope this helps.
regards.
will.

My mare had a similar wound right on the joint. She is out 24/7 and it has been a bugger to heal as she rolls on it and makes it dirty and every time she moves around it opens up again. I have been using purple spray to dry it out and stop it getting infected and then an aloe vera gel to work as a kind of barrier against mud etc. This has worked well but it has taken a good few weeks due to the position of the cut.
