I do think manes are there for a reason, and so am not really a hogging sort of person.

But it would suit your horse if that's what you mean, he has a nice thick chunky neck that could pull it off. Otherwise i think he would look better with wider spaced plaits, they look a bit crowded in the first picture (although they are a nice distance at the bottom, just a bit squished up as you get further up the neck)
 
I'd say nay to hogged manes in general as I like hairy cobs.

However, I think your lad would look good hogged.

He is gorgeous, just my type of horse.

Yeah that's really what's prompted the hogging consideration. His mane is so thick, it's over an inch wide across his neck. I rake and pull it as much as I can, but still there is simply so much that they are fat and blend together! The ones at the bottom are better only because that's where his rug's rubbed his mane out lol!

And it takes AGES, really ages :( he has hunted this season and we loved it, but that's what's prompted it really. It just takes forever!
 
Amymay don't worry, it would be for next season and not now! That is a downside, how do you manage them in summer?
 
As amymay says, it might be better to leave it until after summer now, or else he might miss it when the flies attack. I know fly fringes help, but i don't think they are a substitute for a bit of mane. And then, you can hog it before the hunting season later in the year and he will look very smart :)

ETS again, what do you do with him? You could let it get a bit longer and do a running plait to keep it out of the way but it depends if you show etc.

I've never looked back. She still has her forlock which i plait for hunting and compeating. She wears fly rugs with neck covers as she hates flys anyway and runs round like a loon if she's not wearing a rug. She also wears a fly hat.
 
I think he is too big to look good with a hog, it looks great on a proper cob but he isn't really is he??

I ride a mare that is a lot like him (I think) though longer through the back and she'd look odd clipped because she is more a hunter type that a cob type. If you were to do any showing you would be expected to plait for just about any class he is eligible for too.

I am right in thinking he's a big lad about 17hh aren't I???? He doesn't look it in these pictures but I seem to remember you saying that. Personally I think hogged manes look a bit odd on anything other than a proper cob.
 
he would look lovely hogged - mine is hogged and she is hunter type - her mane was so thick she hated it pulled and raked it just looked a mess when plaited so i hogged and she looks lovely i took forelock off too as i find they look odd with forelock left on. Mine had short mane so didnt really help with flies so no difference in the summer really.
 
Hog him, for sure.

My dad hogs his 7/8's tb for hunting as he can't plait and he looks good. Seeing old pics of him with a mane he looks weird. He keeps it short through the summer too as it keeps him cool. We ensure he has regular fly spray sessions etc and don't have any probs

I just looked on the post! Some of those comments were really harsh .. What pricks .. I think the horse in that post and this one would look lovely with hogged manes. Its up to us owners what we want to do with our horses anyways. I loved a hogged mane :D xx
 
I was also shocked by the comments on that post. My pony Lucy who i posted photos of earlyer does WHP and she is Hogged. I got a lot of stick when i first did it but she's my pony and i don't care. She often wins or is placed but this is because she is a hunter type and often gets 20/20 for her jumping. Yes she'll never get to hoys but i'm shore those same posters would jump down my throught for the football plaits i would need to plait Lucy to show her. She has the best fly rug and fly hat i can buy. Before i hogged her i didn't use a fly rug and she just ran round the field like a loon till i got her in to bring her away from the flys. Each to there own i say. I think the OPs horse and fatarse2s horses would look nice hogged.
 
personally I would hog. Your horse has the right neck and face to carry it off well. I have my cob type hogged and he has the same type of neck as your horse.

I know it's nice to have something to hold on to out hunting, but with his good neck and handsome head hogging him will do it all justice. Plus, you won't have to worry about his amne getting rubbed out by a rug!
 
Wow Fatarse that was a scary thread! OP, I'm not a fan of hogging but I think your horse would suit it. But I never even pulled my Irish cob's mane I just let it grow until she looked like a L'Oreal ad. I did trim her split ends though! *runs and hides*

Holy Cr*p! Just waded through all of that! Some of those comments were ridiculous! Glad to see both you and neddy (although not mane ;) survived unscathed :D
 
Take it off if YOU want, leave it off if YOU don't.

Dont let anyone else make your decisions for you - after all we all have our differing opinions - so long as the horse doesn't suffer, which knowing you skewbs, it wont!!! :) then carry on :)
