Hog or not?

now hogging this boy on the other had would be a silly thing to do:D

I think he's look rather dapper hogged ...he or she, sorry I didnt read that part I just had a quick look at the photos so sorry she's a mare.

But yes hogged would look very nice :)
 
As for all that **** about manes being needed for fly protection - rubbish, my cob has been hogged for years after rubbing her mane - she gets too hot under it, since she's been hogged we have had NO rubbing at all, and NO, she doesn't have sweetitch....I also used to help look after polo ponies - all hogged not one had trouble with flies....

Ditto this. My boy hasn't be bothered by flies due to being hogged. Go for it. It will make him look even more handsome.:)
 
Its not a question of smartness for me. Horses with crew cuts do look cool,but my subconcious associates hogged manes with sweet itch. I have no idea why ,except possibly that in 50 odd years of being around horses,I must have seen a lot more hogged horses with sweet itch.If you hog a mane, it becomes the one area of a horses skin that is not protected by overlapping layers of hair. Oh and anyway skewby ,I,m sure I have already threatened to send the boys round if you hog your horse:mad::mad::D
 
Ooh thank you all!! My word kezimac that is a HUGE improvement!!

My pros are:

Not having the only downer on a day's hunting being the fact I have to plait it!!!
He gets hot under it
I don't grab mane anyway, use a neckstrap or out hunting I grab my breastplate
I spend my life combing and fussing with it
It gets rubbed off (nice one Jen hadn't thought of that!!)
I want to (ta kitty lol!!! :))

Cons:

My instructor would murder me
I don't want to deck the poor lad out in a fly rug or fringes or any other such gubbins
He might not suit it his neck is not that long!!
Eta as many said, he is not cobby type at all really, so a travesty? Although a hogged HW hunter looks awesome I think!!
 
I would hog. Me and my daughter are having a similar converstaiuon with regards her HW cob, we left her over the autumn and winter to see if it would grow, but it seems to be getting nibbled by her chums and just going no where.

My mare has a terrible mane to plait, its thin at the bottom and massively fat at the top, plus she willl not be pulled or clipped! I have resorted to doing a sort of half hog on the upper underside using scissors, I have got he nack of getting it very neat so it just blends into her body hair and most people dont even notice - however we only do ocasional local shows.
 
Could suit, though if you show, what classes do you do as hogged manes are only correct for cob or cob type classes, however at local you would get away with it.

As long as you put on a good fly mask and protect the neck with some fly spray or a fly rug, then removing the mane is not a problem.

What I hate to see is a hogged mane with a forelock left on, long unpulled tail and hairy heels - either leave natural or take the lot off, no halfway house.

At the end of the day it will grow back in a year or so if you hate it.
