As title, please tell me I'm not a meanie! Horse was re-hogged at the weekend and in a standard neck turnout whilst neck rug is being repaired he doesn't seem bothered at all but I just feel bad. Neck rug should be ready for this weekend as he is a little muddy without it!

I have had hogged horses turned out without neck rugs, had no concerns and given it little thought apart from the fact they get do get muddy, it is a relatively recent invention and horses survived without them perfectly well.

My ISH is out at night, not hogged and only partly clipped, he has no neck cover on his rug and has been warm every morning all winter, as long as their backs and main muscles are warm, they have a dull tummy they are usually perfectly happy..

It's quite warm during the day so maybe the neck isn't needed? Even if he gets wet and muddy if he's stabled at night he'll have a chance to dry off. I turn one out full clipped and hogged with no neck cover because he's a bit too hot with it on and is only in a lightweight rug anyway. I could do without dealing with the mud but I don't want him over heating.

Makes me feel much better, thanks all :)
There are some polo ponies on their winter break ruggless and hogged and they are copying fine.
Horse is happy and enjoying being a mud monster! I'm probably worrying about nothing.

I never use combo turnouts, even on full clipped horses.

As previously said, they are a recent option and fully clipped horses have coped four years without them

my youngster is fully clipped, lives out 24/7 and in standard neck rug, I don't think she's even noticed, she's certainly not bothered but she was very over weight and now for the first time ever I can finally feel some rib and can't even begin to tell you how relieved I am at this! lol

Mine is hogged because his next gets itchy with his mane left on and he has been out mainly all winter with out a next. Only when it was torrential rain he just had a little rain sheet neck attached to his medium he was fine
