I have always hogged my 14.3hh cob for the summer and let it grow back for the winter so he has more protection for when he lives out. It has always grown back fine , nice and thick and not all stuck up. I think it depends on the mane and that when it grows back it has no rugs on to rub and hinder natural growth.
The spanish hog their foals manes because they believe it makes it grow back thicker, I trim or hog my mares mane as it is correct for spanish mares, it grows back just fine, so no, I don't believe for a moment that it does not grow back properly.
i do believe it may grow back thicker or possibly it may just look thicker. and in some cases it may take quite some time to fall over but other than that it should be fine. x
No, I used to hog My old cobs mane for years, and it's normal again now. It only grows straight up for a few months while it isn't heavy enough for gravity to make it fall flat.
Also the first new growth of a previously hogged mane will appear to be thicker than that another horse whose mane had been pulled regularly to keep it smart.
It was me where I said about this subject, and I wasn't talking generally, just that two of the horses that have been hogged where I am, have only ever grown upwards, even when really quite long. I different horses grow their manes back differently
My Mum has hogged her hunter for the last few seasons, as it was always very punky and she got sick of figting it into plaits- this year it has grown out flatter and more trainable than it ever was before
I used to ride a RS pony who was beautifully hogged 11 years ago, then they let it grow back and never bothered with the hog again. I rode him again today and unfortunately it's still really bushy and stuck up in the air
Although I suppose it may be like this naturally and that's why they hogged him in the first place.
It can grow back normal, but don't be tempted to pull it until it has flopped over. I made this mistake with an ex polo pony I used to have, it stuck up for ages! The horse I have now was hogged when I bought him. I kept him hogged for a while but when he had a long holiday whilst I was having a baby, I just let it grow. Its a normal pulled mane now.
Nah my mare was hogged when she was brought, grew back and the hogged a few years later, then grew back again. Comes back fine each time. Takes about 5months from hogged to be normal/plaiting length.
i hog mine as i like the look, i didnt do it for two months in winter and it grew to almost 3 inches in two months - it was sticking up but if i had left it, more than like;y would have been able to plait in a couple more months - she does seem to grow mane and tail and feet quickly though!!
