Hogged & Trimmed?? Should I? Show me yours??

No No No No No! No hogging please! She is a lovely traditional cob! And it will take a lot longer than 6 months to grow back believe me!

My boy is hogged and clipped, and he does really suit it, but not only is it a nightmare to keep on top of (it grows quick enough to warrant having to be redone every 3 weeks) but when it does grown back it looks AWFUL!

We left him one winter to grow out (clipping was a major issue back then :o )

In around 6 months my horse had one very impressive mohican, and what looks from a distance like great big poodle style puffs around the bottom of his legs! Not a good look.

My friend said it took her 3 years to grow her mane back from being hogged, and its only midway down his neck! And his feathers dont look very good, not long a flowing like you would expect
 
I'm with the anti's - don't do it!!

Traditionals look great with thier manes and feathers but can look a bit plain with them all missing. Storminateacup's horse is a good example. Really striking in the first photo, quite ordinary looking in the second (No offence!!) :)

Goodness!!:eek: That is quite a change! I'm afraid I'd have to agree with saddlesore and say that he looks so impressive and striking in the first picture but quite plain (no offence meant) in the second.

I think I have decided to leave her as she is for now and maybe have re-think in the spring, that way she's protected from the mud over winter.

Thank you for all your fantastic help and wonderful pictures. It was nice to have such varied ideas on whether to do it or not.:)
 
Noooooooo! please please don't.

I'm not against clipping out but Traddy's should be left Hairy. They're not built like show cobs who are a lot finer, and clipping off their feathers makes them look wierd and out of proportion. And it'll never grow back the same. Hercs feathers were taken off late feb and they are still nowhere near as nice as they used to be.

Just Plait the mane out of the way for everyday and Arab plait for dressage. and Her feathers will protect her from Mudfever too as it makes it harder for the mud to get to her field.

In the 8 years plus we've had Herc, we've only had to take his feathers off twice as he'd scratched them all off anyway. Just keep sticking on the pig oil & sulpher and do it by feel rather than sight.

Also, I think it's strange that you have to bandage her feathers out of the way for the farrier and it seems to be more of an issue with him rather than her as Herc used to have brill feathers (they're still growing back) to the point he stood on them and our farrier has never complained or requested them bandaged.
 
If you want to show, leave her natural - she is the wrong shape and size for a show cob.

Mud fever - our current two have never had it (have always been hairy), but Cairo and Jemima did prior to having their hair grow back. Cover up in P&S and forget them apart from having a feel for anything going on under the hair weekly.

Ditto mites - unless you have open sores, then clipping won't get rid of them - P&S, frontline, injections, neem oil are all good to remove them.

Finally, when I had the hairies shoed, I used tube bandages, just pull on and pull off, no faffing with bandages on the legs. Trimming, I don't need them but I do make sure that their leg hair is clean and dry for the farrier.

I have had over the years needed to full clip out a leg for x-rays and the hair took 6 - 8 months to come back fully. A hogged mane will take up to three years to get back to full traditional length.
 
I'm with Binky! And I think I'll help her in her bid to steal all scissors/clippers/trimmers.
They look SOOO nice traditional with all the hair!

I gasped at the change in your horse storminateacup, thats such a change! If that was my horse, I'd be looking round the field for ages for my horse, and then realise its the clipped one lol. I like the look of the horse in both pics, but look how stunning he is in the first one

CIAB: DONT DO IT lol, your horse is so pretty without being hogged
