My young TB x ID has a hogged mane, just wondered if you all thought this would look odd for dressage??

i know it looks nice when they are all plaited but my lads mane made him look like the wild man of bournio!!!! i know why his dad was hogged now!!!!!!!

also if they are hogged do they look better with their tails pulled?? not too sure what to do!!??!!

What type is your horse? Is he cobby?

Personally I feel that cobs look great hogged, but finer types don't. Although it'll take a good while to grow out a hog (6 months plus until it's plaitable usually), and he'll look like a punk rocker for that time! For dressage it'll be unusual to have a hogged horse, but shouldn't affect your marks.

If he's hogged, yes, it's usual to have his taile pulled.

no he's light/middle weight, sports horse type. he has a lovely pretty head so the hog really suits him, he gets sweet itch in it if i am not careful too which was the main reason for me hogging him in the first place but i'm glad i did now! i'm trying to put some pics online but i cant quite get the hang of the site yet!! as soon as i do i'll post a before and after view, you'll prob agree with me when you've stopped laughing!!!

Personally im not a fan hogged manes on any horse, but each to their own. If you think it looks better then keep it like that, there is no rule (as far as I know) that says your horse has to be plaited, as long as it looks smart and tidy a hogged mane should be fine. Im sure it will look 100times neater than some of the scruffy ones I have seen that look like they have not even been brushed never mind hogged or plaited.

I would pull the tail aswell though, always looks much neater pulled.

yeah was thinking of his tail tonight, does it have to be pulled or could i clip it?? sounds a bit think i know but i have never had to hog/pull tails before!!

two of mine are hogged, purely for practacle(sp) reasons.this is so i can spend my grooming time on their bodies.i would love to have the time to have imaculate pons with mane, thick tail and full feather but unfortunately i have to go to work every day.
i do like hogged though,it kinda `grows` on ya!

Please don't clip it, it'll look like a bog brush after a few weeks! Pulling gives a far neater finish if the horse doesn't mind it, and failing that try a tail rake or similar .

i saw someone using one yesterday for the first time, couldnt believe how easy it was!!! its like trying to brush a hedge at times if i dont condition his evey week, it takes 2 hands to put around it its so thick!! even his dock is twice the size of my old lads!!!!

it is loads more practical, just keep it trimmed every other week and dont have to do a lot in between!!!

also wondered if anyone knows of anything to put on his mane when he scratches it to soothe it?? i used benzyl benzoate last year and it was fab for stopping the flies biting him but tried load of things to soothe it after and none worked!! he's got a couple of sore patches now that i keep putting sudocrem on but it doesnt seem to cool it down!

i'll get one of them tail rakes a try, cant stand pulling tails but suppose i could get someone up to do it for me, thanks for advising me not to cip it though or i'd be the one at the local show with the freaky tail!!! i'd prob slip too and take it all off!!!

when you 1st start doing top of tail, scary amounts come away!!!!!!!but i done all dock area and when it gets to a certain shortness it doesnt cut any more so you cant over do it. i`m really pleased with mine and use the rake about once a week to keep it tidy.
