I've just taken my cob to what will really be his last show of 2009 & poss ever - I dunno. We got 2 x 2nd places and he's a handsome swine, BUT I kindof feel like we've both lost the love for it. He's getting older and even ay local level there is no way we stand a chance of being placed with the young 'uns coming up, so I'm thinking that next year we concentrate on Walk Trots & just having some fun!!

However he is hogged true to type, but he hates it. I can get so far, but then he needs to be twitched. BUT if I'm not showing him anymore, I don't need to keep him hogged any longer.

Has anyone ever tried growing out their Cobs hog? What did it look like, how long did it take to grow out and did you back out halfway through and re-hog it again?? Also if I did decide to do Veteran shows only, would he still need to be hogged or could I just plait?

I have grown my mares hog out this year. I think that it was probably about june that I last hogged her, and her mane is just about lying down - well as much as it ever is going to I think

I had several times that I was sooo tempted to hog her again - but she does look lovely with a mane. The most recent temptation was when I was clipping her a couple of weeks ago - it was so easy to do her neck when she was hogged - no worrying about accidentally clipping her mane!

I think if you are doing veteran stuff plaiting would be fine. xx

eta - that is my mare in my sig, prob about 8 weeks post hog going through the trojan horse period.

I grew my cobs hog out, it didnt take long at all!! Ive continued showing and had much more success as a traditional!! I wouldnt worry about veteran classes and not being hogged, im sure if your smartly turned out and have fun its all that matters. Ill try to find some pics for you.

SU, thats never just two years growth is it? Wow, her mane must grow quick!!

My boys usually hogged, during the winter I often never bother and find by spring it has grown long enough to lie reasonably well. Always whack off again though!

We show in summer plaited and then hog about now! the first couple of plaits for the show season can be difficult but have always managed to do it. I think the first show we do is end of april so about 4-5 months.

Flo I LOVE the Trojan look!! And slinky that is AMAZING!! Cor I wish MY hair would grow like that in just 2 years??!!

I can understand the clipping thing. It is much easier at this time of year with no mane!! Just zip it over. This year though I resorted to Sedolin, which helped, but he still needed twitching towards the end.

He does look Gorgeous all hogged ready to show, but if he really detests it that much that I have to resort to twitching and sedative, should I really continue on the poor fella?

my mare was never 100% keen - but put up with all my fussings!

If showing is the only reason that you have to hog him and you aren't showing any more, then grow it out and see how you get on. If you decide you prefer him hogged, it takes 10 seconds to rectify the problem!! LOL!

The one thing I am not looking forward to this winter are the mud dreads... But I am getting in with the mane and tail before she gets chance to create any!!

about 5 months I would say. You have to go through the loo brush stage and then the rod stewart look- but once it starts to lie it doesnt take long.

Aww thanks, stick with it its def worth it! I love having a mane, we did struggle with neck covers last year but we are going to hopefully not lose any mane this yr!!

I prefer cobs hogged and legs off. unless you spend hours grooming, long mane and feathers tend to look ratty to me.

R2R yes they look gorgeous hogged I do agree. I take it that's what you meant!!

I don't know if I would grow feathers back, but am seriously thinking about growing his mane, just to see what it looks like!!

I'm probably not going to do Cob classes anymore as he's too old so as long as I'm not chucked out of a veteran class I'll be ok with it!!
