Planning on hogging my cob tomorrow for the first time, cob has a bog brush mane, although am fairly good at clipping i have never hogged before?! i know to start from the wither area and work my way up the neck, is it really as easy as it seems?! what about the forelock does that just come off easy too??
Any tips most appreciated, thank you

Try to shape it v slightly as you clip - don't just take the lot off square, a slight bevel at the edges improves the look. Try and get your horse to stretch down as you clip so you get a lovely smooth run without wrinkles. Forelock off too!

Both of mine are hogged - saves on plaiting time for hunting!

If hogging for the first time just make sure you are confident that horse is happy with clippers around its ears and face, as don't want to end up with half a hog! If the mane is long I would then cut off most of the length with scissors first so not to stress your clippers.

I start on one side of the neck and clip the mane upwards, then do the other side. To finish I give them some feed so their necks are stretched out nicely, then just run the clippers down the top of the mane.

If the horse has a weak neck would recommend what the poster before has said, but if has a good topline, would take the whole lot of close to the skin.

My proper cob has his forelock off, but the hunter has his left and just plait it on hunting mornings.

Good luck and post some photos!

Run the clippers up one side, then the other and then finish with the top. I personally leave forelcks on too, for flies, but if its long and straggly then off with it too! As been said for heavens sakes make sure he is good with the clippers up by his ears first :)

Cob will have some sedalin - reason for hogging is horse will not let me near the mane for plaiting or pulling, its like a bog brush!! will be hunting so needs to look smart.
Okay so go up the sides first then finish off with the centre and have a feed on the floor at the end so cobby stretches neck to smooth out skin!!

Thanks for that :)

Wish me luck!
