Morning all,
Vet out to my wonder cob for a lameness work up yesterday and ultrasound found a decent hole in her right hind suspensory, consistent with the sudden onset of the lameness (although only very mild lameness clinically). It seems likely that it was trauma in the field (very steep field).
She is 16, came to me at 12 from a RS career (since she was backed) and numerous physical discomforts, which were solvable with time and care, but I was always aware that her life up to the age of 12 was relatively hard and has meant high wear and tear. She owes me nothing.
She has been out 24/7 in a small herd in a very steep field over summer for the last four years. I have said that I won't do the box rest - no other horses are in over the summer, she'd have no company. She's very opinionated and I am not sure she wouldn't try to clambour over the door anyway ... She's going to do a week's box rest as another horse is currently in, but then she'll be out in a small flat paddock with a friend. Vet has said four months, as opposed to the three for box rest, but obviously increased likelihood that the rest won't work. We're looking at shockwave too.
I have a gut feeling that she's not going to come back to ridden work. But ideally, I'd like her to be able to go back in the (again steep) herd with her friends post recovery - it's the only "true" home she's known ...
Anyone have any hopeful stories so I can think of having her back out in the herd with her friends? Any miracle ideas? Feeling a bit down about it.
