Hole in hoof at the toe

My mares shoes came off on Monday, and she is copeing remarkably well considering she has been in shoes for the last 5 years and is a "flat footed TB". However, on cleaning her feet up today I found on both fronts a hole at the toe. I took photos on my phone but they were abit useless so have shamelessly stolen this image from the net to illustrate what exactly what I am concerned about

Does anyone have an inkling what on earth they are and if I should be worried about them and what I should be doing with/about them.
 
Stretched white line allows bacteria to invade and set up home and have a good munch. You then get what some calls 'seedy toe'. If you sort diet and get someone who knows what they are doing to trim your horse you can fix this.

Some faff for years chasing it down with chemicals and treatments, but the fastest/most effective way IME is correct diet, appropriate exercise, foot correctly trimmed.

I suspect that this has been going on for some time then. When her shoes came off on monday I was horrified to see how much toe she had to loose - nearly an Inch, so I guess that this "affliction" is unsurprising then.

probably - shoes are great for masking problems.

If your horse has heels that look like that too then they need some qualified tlc as well.
 
I use hydrogen peroxide at 3% (boots sell it at 6% and you water it down) syringed hard into any hoof holes like that. It was cured in a couple of weeks, and it had been there for a whole year under the shoe. Get the feed right and it will heal itself.
 
Brilliant thanks for that. I did wonder if that would do the trick as I have some. Will dig it out, pinch one of the dogs syringes and give it a go:D:rolleyes:
