I got my mare in last night and was rerugging her when I noticed that there was a hole about 2cm x 2 cm in the outside wall of her hoof near the back. I'm not sure how the hoof has come out but at present there is a hole between her shoe and her hoof. She is not sore on it but I'd obviously like to plug the hole.

Is Stockholm tar the thing to use?

Be very careful about plugging the hole, you could peg some infection in there. There must have been a weakness in the hoof for it to have broken away which suggests she may already have some infection in the hoof anyway.

Try to scrub some diluted hibiscrub or similar in and around the area, and also in and around her frog and nail holes.

my farrier always says use hydrogen peroxide solution . you can get it from a chemist and it will kill any waterborn baddies.
this solution is mild for disinfecting wounds ect. i dont mean hair bleach or anything like that, and yes i have poured it on my own hand and its never dropped off or got burnt or anything. but you want hydrogen peroxide solution.will fizz like mad when you pour it on but thats it doing its thing. i use it on all mine during the winter .

Formula feet (I think) do a hoof disinfectant that my farrier recommended as my old mare has a permanent cleft in her foot due to a an old coronary band injury.
