Hi

I have a 18 year old 14.2 pony who has just been diagnosed after scans with a hole in his tendon near the sesamoid.

He first went lame, only in trot in August and I had the vet out after a week of field rest. He had 2 weeks of bute twice a day with just walk work which made no difference (guessing arthritis due to his age) and started on a joint supplement which made no difference. So, off to the vets for a lameness work up, inc nerve blocks and xrays which indicated a shadow on his navicular bursa and he was put on navilox, had a course of adequan and remedial hoeing with pads and filler. Not a lot of improvement after 6 weeks so he went back to the vets this week for more tests and the scan found a hole in his tendon. There has been no heat or swelling at all in his leg and the vet reckons that his lameness was improving (I couldn't see it but then, am I really subjective enough?)

Anyway, he had shockwave treatment and will have 2 more courses of that 2 weeks apart, is turned out in the smaller field (stabling makes him stiff, hence 1st diagnosis of arthritis).

Sorry so long

My boy had a hole in a hind tendon and we went to see about stem cell treatment. anyway by the time we went to horsepital, 6 weeks on, they couldn't find the hole as it had completely healed!!!

He had cartrophen injections, bioflow boots on and a joint supplement but all the same it was a miraculous recovery and resulted in a lot of head scratching by the vets.

Chin up - there's always surprises with horses!

Took my mare to vets cause she just wasn't right, and they found a hole in her tendon (along with inflamed ligament)... the hole in the tendon has healed by 5mm and is barely noticeable on ultrasound scan in just 2 weeks from box rest and walking twice a day - so vet was very pleased with that. She is having shockwave therapy for that and her inflamed ligament - so fingers crossed!
Another mare of mine had a hole in her tendon (pitch fork through her leg!!) and that healed after rest and slow exercise... so there's hope!
Good luck!!

My horse split his DDFT nearly 3 years ago. Went to the vet school and had tenoscopy and we are back to hacking and light schooling.

If you manage the injury right with rest and light exercise, there is hope.

One of my horse had a hole tendon - He had nearly a year off competing. But best advise i can give is - control exercise in everyway from turning out in small area, to in hand walking out and BIG KEY here listern to YOUR vets advise - IMHO, old school advise is worth it's weight in gold and that's TIME is best healer. And remember not to push stuff to quickly...........

But if everything goes to plan the tendon with be stronger than before and as we me your horse can continue with it's competeive life mine has - GG in siggy - first in from left

Thank you!
His competitive career has been over for sometime - well to tell the truth, it's mine that's over

But it would be fantastic to have my little pocket rocket hack back for next year.

My lad had a hole and 2 core lesions due to a nasty cut to a hind tendon. On my vets advice, he had 6 mnths box rest with in hand walk work, then a controlled excercise programme for another 6mnths after. I allowed 18mnths from the initial injury before putting him back into full work, and he has now just started competing (and winning!) and hunting again. Time, time and more time - it is amazing what you can achieve with patience.
Good luck!
