How did he do this?

I am just thinking that the bit that has been pushed down could be putting pressure on the interior workings of the hoof (sorry, my hoof anatomy is absolutely appaling) and as it is moving down the hoof, the pressure is being increased because it is becoming nearer to the pressure surface, ie. the sole.

I have no idea how he did it! Might have been when we just got him.

Yes it almost goes down to the pedal bone the x-rays were showing. I really hope it is this and once grown out its fine. Maybe the vet can do something to it so he can do a bit of walk work or something, we'll see.

That looks like it was an abscess that burst out through the corinette band (sp)

I'm surprised your farrier hasn't given you advice on it? When Boo yanked his shoe off recently and part of his horn with it, exposing the inside of his hoof, I wasn't allowed to cement it until the bloody part had grown over but in the end I didn't need to do anything to it as it grew down quite quickly.

I'd love to show this to my farrier to see what he thinks.

Personally, if you continue to be worried I woulds talk to Haydn Price, generally achnowledged as the best corrective farrier in the country (ducks and runs for cover as everyone starts telling me about all the others who are even better

) He's in Hong Kong ATM with the dressage team and is possibly staying for the Paras not sure, but when he comes back have a word, he'll let you know if you can do anything to speed things up/improve them. PM me if you want his number, it's probably ok to post it but I'm just being a bit cautious!

An ID mare I had once had this exact same thing. She had an abscess that burst, as Wizoz says. She was obviously quite lame until the abscess had sorted itself out, then was lame cos the hole in the hoof was a bit pinchy, but once it grew out, she was fine.
