Holiday cover for DIY owners?

If you are on DIY, what do you do with your horses when you go on holiday, especially if you have animals who need medication or special care?
I'd really quite like a holiday this year... :(

My lovely, trust worthy friend who keeps her horses on my yard steps in. Other wise YM would very kindly do it also. I always do both of theirs when they're away so it evens out. Relies on you having someone you trust on your yard though.
 
I speak very nicely to friends and sharer has increased duties. If it's summer it's not so bad although Genie does need to come in each day off the grass. Winter I don't tend to be going away as with two I feel it's too much to put on someone.
 
Find a friend and pay them, or have a look around, there are people who specialise in "pet sitting" and you can pay them to look after your horse, someone with insurance would be a good idea and someone local who can get should there be any emergencys etc

Its something I have looked into doing but never done anything about

I can't help you. If you'd said East Angular I could have told you a couple of people or done them for you. Hopefully someone local to you will know somebody.

Do you have any non DIY yards or competition yards nearby you could pinch a groom from for a couple of hours a day before and after work. When I still worked with horses I'd have been glad of the extra money and that way you've got a better chance of them being competent.
 
we have a girl who offers a service of mucking out turn out etc and she is just an angel - i trust very few people around my lass but she is sweet and kind to her - when big lad went through some behaviour problems she was calm and honest about what happened but also said " with lots of love and support from us all he will get through this " At a time when I was so worried she was my rock :) worth every penny of the small charge she asks :)
 
I moved to rent land on my own, so had no one to look after my 2 if I went away etc. My local saddlery had a leaflet for Kirsty's Horses. They are a professional horse sitting service and have people all over the country.
I have used my local 'sitter' - Clare several times since the end of August and she is great! Not expensive either. I went to my parents last week from Tuesday, coming back New Years eve and my bill was £40. That was for going up twice a day (i.e. 8 visits in total) to feed and check and also do poo picking. I think that's excellent value.
For some reason I thought you were in Bedfordshire, which is where I am, so obviously too far for Clare to travel, but if there is a Kirsty's horses sitter in your area who is even half as nice as Clare, I can highly recommend.
