Quick question to you all - how much would you pay for someone to do holiday cover for your horses? I've been approached to do holiday cover for 2 horses and 2 ponies, turn out/bring in, groom, feed and muck out for one weekend (Saturday and Sunday). This isn't something I've done before so I've no idea what to charge!

Also, what is a typical rate to charge to exercise a horse for 1 hour?

Thanks

Hi, depends on your area. My YO does holiday livery and charges £75 per week inc. Exercise. Factor in your transport costs and whether you're needed to care fir stabled horses or if they are turned out.

From my past experiences, for an professional (who has proper insurance and back up etc if they cant come for some reason) it would prob be £20-35 a day (plus travel if they are coming any distance)

For someone doing it to help out (without insurance etc) it would be about £15-25 a day

the range reflects the nature of the set up and the horses - if they take hours to catch are messy in stables, owner fussy about how stable looks and wants every shaving polished etc.

Exercising would (prof) maybe be £20-the sky per hour depending on the level of the prof, for general helper exercising it would be £10-20 per hour.

ETA its a lot cheaper rates if the horse is put onto a yard for holiday livery as theres no travel, the horse can fit in with the routine etc.

We usually work it so that a friend turns out, another brings in (as a favour) and a girl who is already on the yard does the jobs for payment.

We pay £5 per horse per day for muck out (skip and tidy - we're semi deep litter), water changed, feeds made and pre-netted hay put in!

I am just about to under go a major operation, rendering me useless horse wise for a couple of months.
Have a freelance groom coming in to do stables, turn out, hay, feed etc. she is charging £8 an hour. I envisage mine taking her about an hour and half each time she does them,so approx £12 for once a day, family doing the second visit,or would cost more.

I would charge £5 per horse per day - based on thats what I had to pay my last YO for a days full livery - if you have to travel to the yard specifically I would also add travel costs
