given that i will soon have 2 dogs am thinking that next year's summer holiday is going to be in this country- so would like some recommendations please for self catering cottages that are dog friendly. ideally would like to head down south somewhere (devon, dorset, hampshire possibly) with good walking but also near some sites of interest so maybe a nice town or something (i'm a historian so if historically interesting even better

Around Beer, Branscombe, Lyme Regis - a lovely stretch of coast

We stayed at a place called Rousden in that area, in a gatehouse on the Rousden estate. It was lovely, the estate had a private beach although we didn't use it cos you had to climb down a rope for the last bit and our old dog was not up to that at his advanced age!

well i was hoping that the south might have a vague possibility of sunshine?! thats what puts me off the lakes- it rains too much

If you go on Dog trust website they have all the holiday cottages all over the country that allow pets. Might be worth a look.

We went on Holiday here 2 years ago in March, just the 2 of us very romantic but didn't take the dogs, have said that when we go back will def take them as they would have enjoyed it too. The weather was great, the field the cottage is in is walled and has it's own bit of beach it really was breath-taking. Lots and lots of historical places to visit near by and a beautiful part of the world. Really could go on about it forever, we both agreed it was the best, most relaxing holiday we have had and yet we did soooo much in that week, have some of the best memories of our lives there and will go back soon. Have got the biggest grin remembering it now, thank you for posting this!

Just noticed that it says no pets now, but they used to allow them give them a call about taking the dogs, and it will sleep more than 4, but you do have to book early for the in season dates as they get taken really quick

We had glorious sunshine while the rest of the country was under water

!! But the weather really woudn't have mattered, it was that beautiful and quiet. There were stunning views from every window in the house and we had breakfast on the beach every day, in March
