Can anyone out there tell me if Holkham Beach gets very busy during the week in the summer. We have ridden up there during the autumn and it is v quiet, but are thinking of going during the week before the schools break up and I wondered if we might encounter too many people to make it safe.

Thanks in advance

I grew up in Norfolk and dreamed of riding on Holkham Beach. I'm not sure if my word is much use, given that I now live in Berlin, but I would have thought it will be chockablock in summer, unless you go very early in the morning.
North Norfolk has become a lot more touristy since I was little.

In school holiday time I would expect it to be pretty busy on all good days - BUT it is big enough that you should still be able to find a quiet spot for the dogs to have a good run as most people seem to stay pretty close to the entrance. If you turn left and walk past the naturist bit, it normally seems pretty quiet after you've run the naked people gauntlet!:D

ETA I've just realised this isn't the dogs bit :D But the same should still apply for ponies, as long as wrinkly overweight naked men bending over with their backs to you isn't likely to spook them ;)

I would have thought it would be fairly busy but most people on foot are fairly lazy and pitch their tent/windbreaker/fly kites within about a foot of getting on the beach so once you have negotiated that gauntlet I would say there is plenty of space for a good gallop especially if you ride down the beach a km or so. I went on saturday and it was heaving but still managed a good gallop, and managed to fall off in the sea when horse decided to launch herself out!

We used to go a lot, but stopped this year as have no suitable horses! But if you go very early, its absolutely gorgeous and empty, with the added bonus of it not being hot.

Thanks for all your replies - very helpful. May give it a go, but as you say early!! Not taken this horse before so not quite sure what he will make of nude wrinkly men or windbreaks - I too could be taking a swim!!
